Over a million people subbed to RuneScape in 2019, with ‘many millions’ more playing F2P

Ah RuneScape – the MMO everyone seems to be playing, but nobody you know. It’s made our “underrated” lists repeatedly over the years while many veteran MMO players shrug at it, but maybe today’s news will prove it deserves much more attention from the core MMO crowd: Jagex announced today that RuneScape is still growing and indeed just saw its biggest subber year ever.

“Jagex’s RuneScape franchise achieved its highest-ever player membership peak in 2019 with RuneScape and Old School RuneScape attracting more than 1.1 million paying subscribers, in addition to the many millions who enjoy the free-to-access content. Furthermore, Old School RuneScape, in its first full year on both mobile and PC, saw a surge in popularity with daily active users reaching their highest ever number in the game’s six-year history.”

Jagex’s PR also notes that it hired over 100 new employees in Cambridge in 2019 alone. Not too shabby.

I hopped back into OSRS for a bit, considered subbing but then kind of fell out of interest with it. OSRS’s gameplay still holds up very well, and in some ways felt quite refreshing to play because it doesn’t follow the themepark model and there’s so many things to pursue and do there. Feels kind of similar to playing a MUD for me without needing to type everything in.

I know at least 3 people who play it and 2 do so since ages(mid 00s) so it isnt exactly as rare as you think. Its weakest point is combat but otherwise it is a good sandbox hybrid

Give me an advice. I like GW2 a lot, I couldn’t find enough in Neverwinter to stay though I liked the game, I found Lost Ark, ESO, Path of Exile, Albion, Tree of Savior and many other MMOs to be boring for me. Should I try RuneScape?

If you like exploring, crafting and doing quests and working on skills then yes. If you give too much importance on complex and fun combat then it is not the game for you

Not sure about quests but I definitely like exploring and crafting, this seems interesting, thanks!

Have you played WoW? Runescape always felt like an uglier and clunkier version of WoW for me

I will maybe try WoW Retail + Classic a bit for a month of two someday but overall I just can’t justify for myself paying the sub fee even with Russian discounted pricing – actually any sub fee, idk but I feel sub model isn’t correct for me, I’ll be regretting not getting as much as I can from the game etc. With F2P or B2P I can easily step away for a while. That said I have no doubt WoW will be an interesting experience for me.
