New week, old problems: LOTRO can’t seem to fix its servers

If you logged into Lord of the Rings Online this week hoping for an easy road to Mordor, think again. There are a whole lot of orcs, balrogs, and stuttering servers between here and there.

It doesn’t appear that the issues that (re)plagued the game last week have cleared up at all. After a few days of silence on the matter, Standing Stone Games put out a statement on Monday evening, saying, “The game worlds are experiencing periods of server instability due to external issues, including issues outside of our control. We are taking steps to mitigate these environmental and infrastructure challenges, and we will work to keep you updated here.”

Several players have testified to the unsuitable state of the MMO’s operation. “The lagging in-game today is awful,” one person reported. Other players commiserated about accidentally spending more premium currency than they wanted due to the game’s poor performance.

This period of server woes began last Thursday on the heels of an extended series of problems last month for the game’s hardware. As you wait for all of this to get cleared up, check out this excellent fan video recapping the last decade of LOTRO:
