New week, old problems: LOTRO can’t seem to fix its servers

If you logged into Lord of the Rings Online this week hoping for an easy road to Mordor, think again. There are a whole lot of orcs, balrogs, and stuttering servers between here and there.

It doesn’t appear that the issues that (re)plagued the game last week have cleared up at all. After a few days of silence on the matter, Standing Stone Games put out a statement on Monday evening, saying, “The game worlds are experiencing periods of server instability due to external issues, including issues outside of our control. We are taking steps to mitigate these environmental and infrastructure challenges, and we will work to keep you updated here.”

Several players have testified to the unsuitable state of the MMO’s operation. “The lagging in-game today is awful,” one person reported. Other players commiserated about accidentally spending more premium currency than they wanted due to the game’s poor performance.

This period of server woes began last Thursday on the heels of an extended series of problems last month for the game’s hardware. As you wait for all of this to get cleared up, check out this excellent fan video recapping the last decade of LOTRO:

Playing with my LM it would seem that the performance is reasonable for 90% of the time only to then experience massive drop offs where it is not only unplayable but I have to check that my own internet has not crashed. I was in one mini-boss fight when this happened and thankfully my bear pet has the staying power so that when I was able to move & use skills I had not died. However talking to others on the server, one was in a raid and half their team had suffered the same disruption.

I could understand this if SSG was actively communicating on what they were doing to resolve the situation but we hear nothing – just a “sorry guv’nor – not my fault”. Is this how the game is going to play from now on? The new normal?

Well, except for a few days lagging and rubber banding the server I play on has stabilized and it was about two days. Just once I lost connection. Then you have to ask yourself what game doesn’t lag? In closing the game has been working well for me since Aug 23rd.

I have been playing for the last 2 days without any issues. The reported issues are being overblown by a few vocal malcontents and are related to internet issues beyond SSGs control. Articles like this are not helping.

If there is an example of how some of the community don their blinkers when dealing with feedback they don’t like then this is about as good as you are going to see. Only on the forums they are far more vociferous in their shouting down of any “criticism” of their beloved company.

The sad fact, “Phil”, is that people like you are doing the game a disservice because you are helping perpetuate the views within SSG that the playerbase will put up with whatever service levels are provided. But I doubt you have the intelligence to understand that.

What I’m hearing from this point, which is very minimal thanks to SSG, it sounds like, “Sh*ts broke and we can do nothing (or very little) to actually fix it.”

Well, I am done with LOTRO.

Subscription canceled, browser favorites deleted, game uninstalled, document files deleted.

Not going back. Having way to good a time with other games to mess with this sort of nonsense.

Let’s say it improves, how long until it happens again? They’re lack of communication makes it so challenging to have any confidence in it being resolved.

Meaningful communication is what needs to happen here. That is where I see the message from fans on the Forums/Twitter/Gaming Sites getting muddled. It’s not enough to hear from them saying that they are taking steps to mitigate environmental blah blah blah or saying they are external. While I have no doubt that the datacenter issues might be external, the problem is obviously causing issues that they need to be acting toward coming up with a solution. If it is all on the datacenter, then I’m sure they have courses to take to I dunno, maybe find another datacenter. Even if under contractual obligations, if the party is not able to live up to their end and have the game in a steady stable state, then SSG is losing money which would negate any contractual obligations.

All of this is way of me saying that they need to exercise options they do have control over and why they’re at it, inform their customers that they have a plan in place, even if details need to be kept under wraps, and when we the people can expect said plan to be achieved. I think many would be okay with the game going down for a few weeks or month or two if they can assure people that they are doing something and that our data/characters are safe. This unempathetic lame excuse of external issues, without any real guarantee that these problems are temporary or that something other than negating environmental issues is at play are causing more hemorrhaging than is needed.

Just going by the number of new comments in game and on the forums about the server instability, it seems like yesterday was much better than the weekend. Whether this is because of anything behind the scenes (as noted, the only communication from SSG for the past 5 days has been the same message about instability repeated), or because of lower population, who knows.

We can hope it means progress, but one day is not much evidence for that. I guess we wait and see. Not like we have anything else to go on anyway.
