Much earlier on in the genre, MMOs often fielded numerous types of server rulesets. It wasn’t just PvP and PvE; there were those that the devs would lift certain restrictions, slam others into place, or hand out crazy buffs that changed the entire gameplay experience.

Happily, it seems that after well over a decade of stagnant rulesets, we’ve gotten back to the point where studios are actively tinkering with server setups. Seeing progression servers, Season of Discovery, hardcore servers, roleplay-enforced servers, and more appear is a good sign that the genre is flexing its creative muscles once more.

For those of you who have played on a non-standard server ruleset, which one did you like the best and why? Is it something that should be more widespread today?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
