Fortnite is coming back to iPhone in EU because Europe said so

I mean, kind of by default, but...

It’s been a few years — since 2020, in fact — since the snit fit between Apple and Epic began, provoking the former to cut off Fortnite from iOS devices, all but part of the very long-running feud between Apple, Epic, and Google over monopolistic platform designs and third-party payment options and sideloading. A final result for the Epic v. Apple case, in fact, came earlier this month, when the USSC denied requests for appeals from both parties on the 2021 ruling, which saw most of Epic’s claims rejected – except for the key ruling that stops Apple from barring developers linking to direct payment options that bypass Apple’s massive 30% cut.

But in an interesting coda (or perhaps the next chapter of a never-ending legal saga), Fortnite is coming back to iOS thanks to new European laws — the Digital Markets Act — that paves the way for the battle royale’s return.

“Remember Fortnite on iOS? How bout we bring that back,” the game posted on Twitter. “Later this year, Fortnite will return in Europe on iOS through the Epic Games Store (shoutout DMA — an important new law in the EU making this possible). Apple, the world is watching.”
