WRUP: Deciding the future of What Are You Playing introductions edition

Welcome back to What Are You Playing, our weekly feature in which we tell you what we’re playing over the weekend. For those of you who forgot, last week I announced that I will no longer be turning this feature into a bizarre series of introductions that made no logical sense and that joke will be retired, so my hope is that we can all act like mature adults in deciding a path forward for this column. I think it’s wholly reasonable to continue writing these, but obviously we’ll need a new format. So I’ve come up with three possibilities:

  • A descriptive introduction in which I describe what I am going to be doing outside of video games in a jovial fashion without absurdity or frivolity.
  • A factual introduction in which I provide you, the reader, with some recent interesting facts that have been discovered in the fields of animal science or cultural events. (As you have likely gathered from these prior introductions, I do have an interest in animal science.)
  • A video game introduction that shares an important news story that happened this week but has nothing to do with MMORPGs, thus making it unrelated to our particular site’s niche.

In order to determine what we will do for the future, I have placed a poll below; please vote for your preferred option, and I will try out each format for a week in descending order of popularity. Thank you for your understanding and feedback. Also, please accept my apologies for the wombat picture as the header; our image bank for this column is mostly nonsensical. I hope you will not hold it against the future, less frivolous state of this feature.

What will the future format of WRUP be?

Bonus question: Is there a movie you wish you had seen in theaters but didn’t get to for whatever reason?

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Still in Guild Wars 2, though this weekend’s gonna be busy with Fall Things, so we’ll see whether I get far. I did download Throne & Liberty, but I’ve done nothing with it thus far. GW2 just still has my attention. NCsoft wins either way, I suppose.

Bonus question: Honestly, maybe stuff that came out before I was born? It would’ve been neat to see Star Wars Episode IV in its first run, in situ, before it became a whole thing, or as it was happening. Alas, time doesn’t flow that direction. But I feel like I saw everything I’d have wanted to see when I was alive/old enough to do it – the big “experience” movies where people dress up and clap and come for the midnight show, and the surrounding nonsense is just as fun as the movie. Edit: OK, I thought of one: Arrival. I saw that a while ago and it would’ve been terrifying in a theater.

Carlo Lacsina (@UltraMudkipEX, YouTube, Twitch): Throne & Liberty.

Bonus Question: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Didn’t watch it in theaters because I was way too cool for theaters back in the day. Why drive to a theater when I could just wait for it on DvD? That’s exactly what I did.

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): I’ll likely be dinking about in Throne & Liberty and hunting materials and space cash in Elite: Dangerous, but I also am feeling the need for some shootin’ games, so that means The First Descendant or Destiny 2 are probably coming back into my personal rotation.

I’m very much like Bree: The movies I wanted to “experience” in theaters I have experienced already, and nothing that’s been out semi-recently has made me want to go out and watch on the big screen. I guess any one of the MCU films would have probably been fun in theaters, if only to soak in the absolute spectacle.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Everyone else is liberating thrones, but not me, I’m sticking it out in Final Fantasy XIV. And also a bit of Satisfactory, on the side. There may be something else in the mix, but that’s going to depend on other people so I’m not going to prognosticate about it.

The past couple of years have been really rough, which sucks, because I really like movies but I can’t always justify going to the movies. There is always a huge list of films that I wish I saw in theaters but didn’t get to for whatever reason; right now The Substance is looking like a film I’m going to need to catch later (despite it looking exceptionally good), and before that Hundreds of Beavers, Monkey Man, and Argylle were all films I wish I had gotten to see in theaters but didn’t get a chance to. (Still haven’t seen the first one on that list. Monkey Man is great; Argylle was all right as a film, but way too long to get to the central premise that made the movie interesting and would have been better without calling it out as a secret twist.)

Sam Kash (@thesamkash): I’m very close to completing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, so hopefully I get some real time in it this weekend. I was AFK last weekend and didn’t have a chance to play at all. Harry Potter: Magic Awakened continues to wind down. This is the final month after all. Then I’ll be playing some Oathsworn on the tabletop. Very excited and that.

Bonus: I don’t really watch a lot of movies anymore. If I had to say I’d likely choose some of those Avengers movies. I ended up burning out on superheroes but I think it would have been cool to see.

Tyler Edwards (blog): I’m going to check out the Steam demos for REYNATIS and Songs of Silence. JRPG and turn-based strategy are not my usual cup of tea, but the store pages make them look interesting, so I’ll give it a shot. Whatever time’s left will go to continuing to level alts and run delves in World of Warcraft.

Bonus question: Pacific Rim. I didn’t even like the movie that much in the end, but it would have been nice to see the spectacle on the big screen.
