Did you know that Square-Enix released a 4v4 arena shooter in the vein of Splatoon for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 less than a year ago? Well, it did. The game is called Foamstars, and it turns out that it did not have the staying power of the aforementioned Nintendo franchise because it’s officially entering maintenance mode after the conclusion of its newest season on January 17th, 2025. Once the last season ends, the game will be moved to an automated schedule of cycling through existing content.
The official announcement claims that the game will remain online and playable for fans for the foreseeable future, although how long that will hold true remains to be seen. The game clearly struggled to find its audience and wasn’t a success, but the bright side is (as noted) that the title is remaining available even if it’s not getting any new content updates. And hey, it’s still not the biggest bellyflop of a shooter released this year, right?
