MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our award for the Best worst application of MMO justice. The Golden Yachties series is our run of fauxwards, named in honor of somebody we’ve long forgotten from Old Massively who insisted that surely we make so much money that we’re typing MMO blog posts from a gold-plated yacht. (Joke’s on you; it was always silver. Gold is too heavy.)
And the winner is…
Players respond to Fortnite Cybertrucks with kill-on-sight mandate
This story happened back in July, but I’m still laughing about it: Fortnite decided to put a digital version of the hideous and dangerous Tesla Cybertruck in the game, and the playerbase absolutely revolted. As we reported, “multiple players [were] openly resolving to annihilate anyone found driving the angular vehicle; at least one player is providing the pro tip that it has a real big windshield that’s perfect for landing headshots.”
The best part is the Fortnite devs didn’t seem to want to truck in their game any more than players did, as multiple studio folks cheered on the carnage.
Of course, we have runners-up that run the spectrum of criming to instant karma:
- Just before being laid off this past spring, Blizzard’s Adam Holisky cleverly cashed out all his employee codes for free game time – a reported 10 years’ worth. Good for him, tbh.
- Remember Axie Infinity, the extremely exploitative crypto-grinder? One of its co-founders was personally caught up in one of the thefts that have plagued blockchains. “You know, no big deal, just $9.5M of totally real, not at all fake money being stolen,” MOP’s Chris snarked. “Happens every day.”
