The Daily Grind: Are you allergic to certain art styles in MMOs?

Art and aesthetics are some of the most subjective areas of an MMO, and it’s never assured that what appeals to one person will appeal to a great deal many more. I’m reminded of the time when WildStar came out and I was talking with MJ about it. I found the cartoony art style colorful and appealing, but to MJ, it was overly garish and a little off-putting.

And you know what? Neither of us was wrong! MMOs have to make a choice of visual style and hope that it’s something that more people will like than hate, but it isn’t a given thing. Some of us might love or hate, say, cel shading, bright colors, realistic proportions, anime influences, exaggerated features.

So today let’s sound off on MMO art styles that simply don’t work for you while acknowledging that others may actually groove on it. What art styles are you allergic to seeing?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
