Within the larger MMO community, there are three basic stances regarding guidance for builds online. The first group believes that ever acknowledging that Thing A might in fact be stronger than Thing B is heretical behavior, how absolute dare; we must pretend that all things are equivalent, so even a moment of checking online is a horrible crime. The second group believes that the people who write guides online are in fact the true holy identities, full stop, so we should absolutely revere these people at all times, and if you are not slavishly following a guide, you are going to be useless in your chosen game.
The third group, which is probably (hopefully) the majority except when it comes to volume of angry statements, recognizes that other people may have insights about the best builds and can look at those insights, forms its own opinions about playstyle, and then makes decisions that line up with those opinions. So today I’m curious about how much research you do for your MMO builds. Do you try to just stick with common wisdom? Do you look up a little bit of information? Simulate results based on what you want to do? Or just go with whatever looks neat in the moment?
