At this point, it’s a fairly natural reaction to be wary of video game movie adaptations, especially ones that employ the tired old “person from the real world gets trapped in the alternate-dimension game world” trope, as is the case with the upcoming Monster Hunter movie. One of the first on-set photos of the film, which showed star Milla Jovovich in modern military gear and leaning against a Humvee, didn’t do much to assuage fans’ trepidation, but the latest production image shows that there may be hope yet.
This time, instead of being decked out with an assault rifle and kevlar, Jovovich is attired in some traditional Monster Hunter armor — specifically an Odogaron-inspired breastplate — complete with wrist-mounted slinger. Co-star Tony Jaa, meanwhile, is the spitting image of Monster Hunter World’s Field Team Leader, from his leather armor right down to his massive Giant Jawblade greatsword. He also appears to be carrying a bow of some sort, though my MHW weapon knowledge is not nearly encyclopedic enough to identify it offhand. Nevertheless, if you were one of the many folks who were afraid the Monster Hunter movie would just be two hours of army men trying to blast a Rathalos out of the air with assault rifles and fighter jets, perhaps this will give you some hope that it won’t be entirely terrible.
