New World halts transfers, warns gold dupe exploiters as players call for a rollback

Turns out the gold duping bug in New World wasn’t just a rumor: Amazon confirmed that the transfers enabled yesterday were allowing some folks to dupe gold and other items. Initially, Amazon told players that it had “identified a small number of characters who after moving servers are in an invalid data state that prevents their character from properly saving” – and a small chunk of those players also moved gold around, effectively duping it.

“Some players among this small set transferred gold or items while their character was affected. All of these transactions are logged in our database. We are reviewing them now and any players found deliberately using this condition to gain advantage will be banned for exploiting. We will also remove items or gold received where appropriate.”

The plan was to prevent players from logging in at all when affected by these transfer problems, but as of this afternoon, the studio says the “invalid data state” bug is still happening, so it’s shut down transfers while it sorts it all out.

“We’ve transferred approximately 150K players since character transfers went live. A small number of those have resulted in characters with an invalid data state that needs to be corrected. We’ve done that for those affected last night, but there are a still some new transfers affected that we see happening. We have paused character transfers and evaluate how we can prevent future occurrences of this problem. When that is resolved we’ll resume the service, with an announcement ahead of time.”

The forum thread complaining about the bug is massive as players are demanding a rollback. Amazon hasn’t uttered that word, but it did note that “appropriate action will be taken” on accounts that have taken advantage of the exploit.
