The Daily Grind: Do you put too much hope in MMOs that are far out?

I’ll be up front with you all: I absolutely love anticipating, rooting for, and buying into the hype of upcoming MMORPGs. I know it won’t all pan out, but dang it, it’s so fun to get excited over the potential that a studio might be able to pull off even 70% of what it’s promising.

That said, I’ve noticed a… trend, shall we say? A trend of how we as a community seem to put more hope in newly announced titles that are much, much further out than ones that have been in development for a while and are presumably closer to release. Perhaps we haven’t been disillusioned yet, or maybe it’s just that new MMO smell that attracts.

In last year’s awards, a lot of our most anticipated titles didn’t even have names, nevermind a firm feature set. That didn’t seem to stop us from drooling after them, though!

In any case, do you think that you — and the rest of us — put too much hope in MMOs that are quite far out?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
