The Daily Grind: How much thought do you put into your characters in MMOs?

But WHY does she only have a bra.

Not every MMO has a roleplaying scene. Heck, some of them make it difficult to impossible to even imagine roleplaying within them. In those games, if you want to call your character “Ratlicker 5000,” there’s nothing really stopping you or pushing you to do otherwise. This is only a problem if later you want to tell a story about Ratlicker and why he licks rats in the first place, and not every game really gives you the freedom to do so.

But a lot of games do let you do that. Oh, sure, you are not going to be roleplaying your character in a game, but you can still think about who you’re playing and why that character wields certain weapons or has a certain aesthetic. Not that any game will exactly force you to do that; you can, if you want, just dress up in whatever you think is cool and never give any thought to the character you’re playing. So how much thought do you put into characters in MMOs?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
