It seems everything you need to sell a game on Kickstarter is a bunch of lofty promises and a fancy tech-demo in a third party engine. Easy.

Well; let’s hope it works out for them.

What’s the point in Kickstarting a nearly finished game?

Find me an MMO, KS or otherwise, that hasn’t made a ‘bunch of lofty promises’.

The dev team has solid industry chops and there are plenty of gameplay videos out there with substance. They’re not relying primarily on KS funds like so many other games out there; only 2-3 million of the $30 million budget is coming from the Kickstarter (which is probably more a marketing tool than anything else).

Sure Ashes could fail like any other MMO. It’s not like having a game in development for 5 years with actual publisher support guarantees a good game. Quite the contrary, it would seem, since we’re still playing WoW a decade and countless dead MMOs later.

3rd party engines. Who ISN’T using them? Why reinvent the wheel? Why absorb the costs? UE4 doesn’t suck, and Intrepid is doing all the network backend themselves as they should be.

I don’t want to white knight or promote Ashes. I think there are risks. I’m not certain it will deliver on some mechanics that are important to me, but I’ve done my research and I’m willing to give them a chance. I certainly think they’ve shown enough not to be dismissed out of hand.

That live game play was gorgeous.

Have they said how much of what they are showing is from the Marketplace vs. created in house? Genuinely curious. :)

The footage was 100% in engine, and original art.

There’s another video where the Rogue/Ranger character does some parkour that was probably scripted with 3rd party animation…but that was in engine too. Otherwise it’s all in house.

Yeah I know they’ve been doing in-engine footage. However, I was under the impression most of the assets were from the marketplace. This is encouraging. :)

I know the environments and the character models are their own work. I don’t know if things like animations or random buildings are marketplace. Honestly haven’t looked into that but I’d be ok if that were the case because those are smaller items that are never complete until later anyway.

On that we can agree at least :-)

Nobody wants to complain about the streaming software driving FPS down to single digits every time the character turned? ;)

The Predator/Art of War video is worth watching if you liked that footage. 100% in engine, but I think parts of it were scripted.

Well that was um interesting.

I am not sure that the folks in the chat did the devs any favours. If they are an example of who will be playing or the target audience then I can say I won’t even consider this game as an option let alone play it.

Thank you for stream and your questions MJ

That’s pretty much every Twitch chat ever. I wouldn’t write the game off for that aspect alone.

No it isn’t. If you want I will be happy to point you towards streams that are just as busy but the folks in chat remain polite and respectful.

They’re going to have to work hard to clean up the community they are clearly currently cultivating. Assuming they want to clean it up. Most games like this don’t.
