EVE: Valkyrie allows players to ditch the VR headset

This is just your weekly reminder from CCP that EVE: Valkyrie wasn’t a figment of your imagination, it still exists, and please for the love of all that is holy, buy it already. Please.

Oh, and it’s also a major announcement that Valkyrie — a multiplayer sci-fi fighter spin-off of EVE Online — is preparing to ditch the expensive requirement of a virtual reality headset. That’s right: Come September 26th, you won’t need a VR headset to play this VR game.

This is thanks to a new version of the game called EVE: Valkyrie — Warzone, which allows both VR and non-VR players to battle together on the same server. The Warzone update will also introduce a new generation of ships, add a mod-based progression system, include “ultra” abilities, trot out more maps, raise the rank cap to 60, toss in mouse-and-keyboard support, and more.

This is an interesting tactic beyond the whole increase the game base. If VR gives or even if their is just the impression that it gives players an advantage then that could be a strong motivator to get players to buy VR headsets because one should never underestimate how much money players are willing to throw down for an advantage over others.

Oculus Rift with controllers is $399 at Best Buy compared to a GTX 1070 which is about $440 so not even one of the more expensive PC components. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/oculus-rift-touch-virtual-reality-headset-bundle-for-compatible-windows-pcs/5989502.p?skuId=5989502

Laughing at the reactions below. A game decides to broaden their fan base, and you all read this as “VR is a failure”. Time will prove you wrong. A squirrel will eat meat sometimes, but that doesn’t mean they are giving up on nuts.

Yes, now people who don’t have silly amounts of money to waste on peripherals will be able to see what it’s like.

Question is, is the gameplay good enough without the gimmick.

IMO,big money doesn’t always have your best interests at heart.

I’ve noticed a fair few ‘VR only’ games/gamemodes are dropping the VR meme, including at least one PS4 ‘vr only’ title dropping vr altogether.

Maybe strapping a monitor to your face and assuming its going to go full .HACK is turning out to be the bunk it always was and the consumers finally losing interest?

Just today UPS announced it will use VR to train its new drivers. O noes, VR has failed

Evidently. Something akin to “paperboy” I guess. LOL

Not just that, but also building a game to sell to such a small segment of the market (those that can afford the whole VR setup) and expecting it to do well financially seems like wishful thinking.

This game without the VR Headset is going to suck. Its already pretty meh once the novelty of the headset wears off.
