Maguss is a mash-up of Pokémon Go and Harry Potter

It might be the closest you will ever get to living out your Harry Potter fantasies without heading down to Universal Studios in Orlando. Maguss is a Pokémon Go-style ARG that draws heavy (but not copyright-infringing) inspiration from the Wizarding World — and it’s about ready to hit the public stage.

A shade more complicated than Pokémon Go, Maguss has player wizards use a phone and wand to interact with a virtual world overlaid on the real one. By casting spells, players can gather important ingredients, battle imaginary monsters, brew potions, and duel between one another. It is being made for iOS and Android, is coming out later this year, and doesn’t require a wand accessory to play. But seriously, if you’re going to do this, you might as well do it right.

On August 30th, the team indicated that the public beta is right around the corner: “We need approx. one more week to be done with monetization features […] There is still a lot left but we are making good progress each day and getting closer and closer to what we imagine public beta version will look like. Hopefully we can manage to add all we want before we release it for public and for you to enjoy. The next update will be huge!”

Same like Hansen, Day One Supporter and owner of the Big Pack ( incl. Wand )
I must say this Game has a solid Base but it is way to early for a public Beta, The Bugs are overwhelming and it has right now some Major Gamebreaking Issues, especially with PVP.

Lets w8 for the Patches to Come.

I’m a Day 1 Indiegogo supporter of Maguss and have been alpha testing for many months. I’m very surprised how damn fun the game is. Yes, the wand will be too geeky for me, but my kid can’t wait. You can still play just fine tracing the spells with your finger on the screen. It’s a blast.

The PvE fights are fun, the PvP is more than than I’d expected (having to build a spell deck from the numerous spells available really is key), the level and gear progression is fun, the crafting is a bit weak but not bad. Chests are now in, and dungeons are gonna be a hoot.

And all this from a tiny European indie team who are very nice and apparently hard-working. I’ve been impressed, and can’t wait to see where they take Maguss in the future.

I can see it now, fifty people running around a park staring through their phones and screaming stuff as they flail around.

I mean, the overall idea is fine… but this just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. As in, take the trash, privacy issues, and lawlessness of PGo, and add physical injuries from running around fake fighting, plus broken phones that flew out of people’s hands and hit somebody in the face, and… yeah.

Not sure AR as it stands is a good idea here.

You can PvE and PvP by just tracing spells on your screen.

It’d be no different from people standing around playing PoGO.

We need AR glasses for this, so that it can actually be as the video wants to make you believe. I don’t see the point of a game like this if you’re just going to be walking around staring at your phone screen.

Why, so you can have a better excuse that reading a text when you tumble into a fountain or step in front of traffic and cause an accident (to cite things people have actually done with texts.)

Just imaging a park full of people playing this with wands out all yelling and screaming while dueling each other.

I got to be honest with you this may be to nerdy even for me.

Just don’t underestimate the likelihood of your wand being mistaken for a knife or a gun. Other than that, sounds pretty cool.
