Hi-Rez Expo 2018: Paladins introduces battle royale mode, new champion Moji, and battle cat mounts

Big brother SMITE isn’t getting all the attention at this year’s Hi-Rez Expo 2018 – Paladins is definitely seeing some love too. The team-based shooter got quite the reveal of its own during the keynote address this morning: a new Battle Royale game mode! Paladins: Battlegrounds will consist of 100 players broken into teams trying to survive while exploring and looting on a massive open map that slowly constricts with a deadly fog. The 20-minute matches play out on a map 300 times the square footage of a typical Paladins siege map. An early alpha version is playable here at HRX, so keep your eyes out for our hands-on!

Devs also revealed other tidbits, including the game’s 35th champion, Moji (a magical Flank that gets to ride into battle on a summoned two-headed dragon); a new Team Deathmatch mode with a new map (Trade District); and new battle cat mounts. The first battle cat, the Primal Prowler, will be given away exclusively to Twitch Prime members. Members will also get a Twitch Prime King Bomb King skin. Check out the trailers for all the reveals below!

Well, that’s interesting. Guess we’ll see how it goes. I just hope that they don’t try to force the “unbound” card mode into Battle Royale or else it’ll completely undermine whatever good/unique qualities might be had.

They will. I’m betting they did the unbound mode exactly for that.

At least, the max level is 10. For some reason, i’m thinking they think this mode will be like Alterac Valley. You’ll play for a ungodly ammount of time, and not pay attention at how long it takes to farm the cards.

Paladins is pretty much the dark side of HiRez while Smite is largely the bright and happy side of things. What was once getting high praise as being the F2P alternative to Overwatch, they’ve forced the card system to work to a point where they have a blatant Pay-to-Win game mode called “Unbound”… yet it’s separate from “Bound” modes so at least people can ignore it completely if they choose to. Still it’s reminiscent of the junk Paragon has done with its card system and it’s left a massively sour taste in a lot of folks’ mouths, enough to where Paladins’ reviews tanked hard after OB64 released.

Battle Royale is really kind of weird/surprising to see from HiRez though with Paladins. How the heck is that going to even work when this game revolves around specific heroes and abilities? I guess I’m somewhat intrigued/interested to see how it plays out, because Fortnite already beat them to the cartoony aspect so they have to be bringing something unique to the table in order to make it work.

Battle royale is the new black.

Bungie, I am looking at you… don’t let the train leave the station without you!

So they’re chasing the battle royal fad as well, eh?

This game is like all over the place copying everything and anything in order to…I’m confused. So they have the dTCG but not trading cards. They’re like RPG upgrades, but not so. It is similar to TF2 with many modes and yet not. But now it is. And yet still not. Many ideas from Smite ported over into it. Not really Overwatch, considering that is a modern-day homage of Team Fortress 2.

So to recap we have…..Overwatch, Team Fortress 2, Smite, some TCG, Unreal Tournament, Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, and mounts all wrapped up in a Paladin’s skinned taco? Does that sum it up? All they need now is to add in zombies and -to poke fun of SC- a space station shooter mode.

Terminus and androxus are both zombies

Good content, too bad it’s overshadowed by how crappy OB64 was. Maybe the new card system is better for the Battle Royale maps. I don’t know.

I’ve been playing Paladins since like CB4-6 I can’t remember it’s been so long, but the game has changed A LOT. Like a lot, a lot. And I really don’t like the new card leveling system especially since none of my cards (which I owned about 90% of) were NOT lvl4 like they said they would be, and on top of that, the amount of gold I was given wasn’t even enough to buy like 2 champion chests… I have no interest in the Battle Royale game mode of any game and probably will be drifting further away from it as a result of this announcement purely from my past history of GA -> Tribes -> Smite -> Paladins and seeing how when HiRez injects these sweeping monetization changes to one of their games = move-on time for them. I would not be surprised if they rode out Paladins for another year or so and then announced a sci-fi looter shooter, probably with the Global Agenda IP, to compete with Destiny/Warframe since Blizzard has been rumored to be working on an OW-themed PvE shooter. Time will tell.

I’m not saying this isn’t what’s going to happen. It probably is. I know how HR operate.

My point is: The mode is actually close to what Paladins was. So, it may end up fitting the game. And it sounds fun as hell.

I find the best advice is to never trust Hi-rez for even a second.

Eh. Smite’s been widely successful for them and the changes they’re making for Season 5 look like it’s going in a positive direction. Most of the things they do with Smite has been nothing but positive.

Paladins, on the other hand, is where things have been really sketchy, and of course their handling of other games hasn’t helped either. They’ve been forcing the card system to work in a way that got a ton of backlash because they now have a P2W “Unbound” mode in the game. But a Battle Royale mode could be interesting depending on how they handle it; already the map looks like it has more life to it than Fortnite/PUBG/H1Z1.

I don’t. I don’t trust Erez the distance i can spit.

That being said, they have fun games. That’s what i play Paladins for: Fun. If the BR mode is fun, i will play. That’s enough for me.

Soren, i would be careful with that Smite statement. I stopped playing like three months ago. If i well recall, the servers were awfully laggy, the meta was stale. While they DO try to keep Smite afloat, they’re using it’s success to fund other ventures.

It’s what Erez does. He did that with GA. He did with Tribes. He’s doing with Smite, and now with Paladins.
