With a relatively flat year in terms of Kickstarter’s video games fundraising, 2017 ended up handing the crown of crowdfunding back to Star Citizen. The sci-fi project raised $34.91 million over the year, versus $17.25 million for all of the 2017 Kickstarter video game projects combined.
Star Citizen’s 2017 haul was only slightly down from both 2016 ($36.11M) and 2015 ($35.9M). With game creation so lucrative, you have to wonder what incentive there is to launch it, eh? Polygon notes that the numbers here come from Roberts Space Industries and does not include any adjustments based on returns.
So far, the new year is off to a good start, with the testing of Star Citizen’s Alpha 3.0 currently running and an increased focus on the upcoming Squadron 42 single-player experience.
Said it before, but there is no way that someone isn’t laundering money through this project.
How can anyone deny money to this man?
Is it just me, or is he starting to look a lot like Jim Bakker?

Edit: No similarity besides appearance is to be implied from this post. Really, don’t come after me.
Um… nope unless the similarity you are referring to is they’re human and white. We don’t really all look alike, you know… unless you’re referring to the cat… Roberts does have a certain fluffiness to him.
I think the implication could be more interpreted as “buyer beware”. :)
No, no, no. No implication, honest!* I just think they look similar. Though all white dudes do look similar. I’m always confusing myself with Hugh Jackman.
*Honest!
Had to click the “like” after the edit comment. That’s just hilarious!
I can see a vague similarity — male, dark hair, and they both have teeth. But Sandi is no TFB… FFS!

I guess tongue in cheek humour is out of fashion now huh?
Bleeeeeeh bleeeeeeh bleeeeeeeh
Right. Like MOP is the epicentre for SC flame wars.
And I agree — Justin is a quality journalist. Quality observation, quality commenter!
;)
Yet another wrong meme. His name is Francis Soyer.
Yeah it’s been a few decades since I’ve seen the movie. Was stationed for a bit where parts of it was filmed (right after it was filmed…dating myself once again). Regardless, once again though instead embracing the intent you go along with how you post. Keep on, keepin on Melissa.
“yet another” was used generically, not aimed at you. Didn’t know you made it yourself… no need to take it personally.
I didn’t, I’m just commenting on the fact that you do this often.
but any truth in those numbers? RCI can show any number to look good and out of trouble:p Something fishy when one game gets more money that whole kickstarter.
The main thing is we don’t know how many refunds have gone through. So their total is actually $34.91 million minus…. unknown. Thus the total is unknown.
Take the worst bet and say minus 200.000 did it make a difference? Nope.
You didn’t even get their company abbreviation right.
THANKS XOXO

CIG crowing about how they’ve made loadsa money with their $1000 a piece macrotransactions compared to all the other kickstarters with their $20 items…
Now, if they could just deliver something on time and to spec, that would be nice.
In fairness, CIG hasn’t actually crowed about this.
From the article…
Ehhhh, that’s not even close to crowing.
Sure it is. They’re the ones putting it out there, they’re the ones saying look how successful we are and how much better we are than all the other kickstarter games combined.
The funding chart has been on their website since forever. The alternative would be to hide it (which would result in further calls of scams, etc).
I don’t see how they can publicly share information without it being called crowing, then.
Nothing CIG does can get them credit with the people who’re sick to death that the game isn’t “out yet”.
These tools can only handle 6 months of dev cycle before they demand a game be fully launched and fully featured with everything they’ve ever wanted a video game to have.
Look at Destiny 2. It took 2 years to get that hot turd box out to the consumers and now people are SURPRISED its a festering puddle of poo.
at least destiny running at 60 fps on any toaster and not some silly 7-10 fps like some games….
NIce one, give a game that is x1000 more ambitious shit for not running at 60 fps in Alpha.
You’re clearly a champion of game development.
There is no mention of the funding chart being the source for this data.
All that is mentioned in the article is “the team behind the game say…” and that the data comes from Kickstarter and CIG/RSI.
If the team are saying something then they are bragging about it, they’re pointing their success over others which is the very definition of crowing.
I disagree.
If CIG says: “We earned a bazillion dollars”, and Kickstarter says “we earned a zillion dollars”, then CIG is saying that they earned more, but that’s not really crowing.
To TheDonDude:
Because according to some around, everything CIG has done, is doing and will do is subject to a conspiracy theory of pure evilness :)
Nope.
This is true…

Dammit, I should have been watching Saturday night news… I might have learned this earlier! /sob
I don’t think enough money exist in the crowdfunding-sphere for any competitor to raise really… there’s only that many arab oil princes with golden toilets in the world.
