Ship of Heroes’ Casey McGeever reflects on GDC 2018

With GDC 2018 in the bag, Casey McGeever is back from showing off Ship of Heroes and has a few reflections about the experience. Among many observations, McGeever talked up PopcornFX, which he said will be used to upgrade the visuals of Ship of Heroes’ effects.

He shared many takeaways from his meetings and panels, including “a move back toward subscriptions for MMOs,” a push back against toxicity in gaming, and efforts being done to put more players on the screen in online games.

And regarding his own project? “I did not see anything that suggests to me that a niche game like SoH will not succeed,” he said.

Of course, you could also get our take from meeting and talking with McGeever about this upcoming superhero MMORPG. We urged you to “keep your eyes” on this project and its scrappy team.

Interesting to hear that the people designing/running the games are focusing on this now/finally, as an industry/group, vs. ignoring/giving lip service.

Reading through his post, it’s nice to see that he thinks there is a general move towards getting more players on screen.

It’s about time massively multiplayer developers remembered that being massively multiplayer is their only unique selling point! I recognise that there are massive technical challenges to increasing the player count but it feels like most developers haven’t even been trying to get better for the last 10 years.

So, I love seeing stories about SpatialOS, or the Camelot Unchained engine, it gives me hope that the genre may one day achieve it’s potential.

Rikti War ship raid was a helluva lot of fun.

Chaotic but fun.

Casey looks a little like Sean Astin in this picture.

Also, I didn’t see anything in the forum post about subscription mmo’s.

Is SOH going to be sub only?

In point #5 (“Summarizing”) he mentions it although I hadn’t seen it in 1-4. I’m actually in favor of moving to sub games as I think that helps keep a developer in business and allows me to “vote with my wallet.”

It also makes it more painful for trolling.
