No Man’s Sky announces free ‘NEXT’ update for all platforms – yes, Xbox One too

Big empty.

Ahead of an apparent impending leak, Hello Games’ Sean Murray dropped a “small announcement” about No Man’s Sky this morning.

“Coming in Summer 2018 is No Man’s Sky NEXT, a free update for PS4, PC, Xbox and WeGame,” he writes. “It’s our largest update so far, and we’re working our socks off.” There’s a teeny trailer too, and I do mean teeny – it’s just the title of the game. You might recall that the game isn’t actually out on Xbox One yet, so that’s apparently happening simultaneously.

MMO players will recall that the game raised ire ahead of its launch back in 2016 for deceptive marketing practices, including suggestions of multiplayer that didn’t materialize at launch, though subsequent well-received updates have since made it a reality.

Get caught up on the whole NMS saga…

I played it for 30-40 hours when it came out. It was fun exploring, but there was really nothing to do long term. I still enjoyed the vastness of it. It says something about the team that they have been heads down still working on the game despite all the hate and whiners.

Good for the team, they have taken some shots. The venom aimed towards them was really terrible. It’s a damn game.

I’m really looking forward to this. I enjoy NMS quite a bit and always love seeing it updated.

Ironically, I did purchase it for about $15. Which was the highest price I was willing to pay for it out of principle too.

It’s been $10 on sale at least once so far, on PS4 and I think Steam during their seasonal sales.

At least in the US.

I know its only 7 bucks more, but like i said, its a matter of principle.

edit: and looking it up, it doesnt look like its ever been 10 dollars in the US on the ps4 either.

I played this again for a couple of weeks back in February and I was honestly surprised how much it has improved since launch. It’s nice to see that they continue to expand on the content.

The sad thing is that I don’t expect many people care enough anymore to check it out again after the fuster cluck launch, which is understandable but still sad.

If there is one game that should have released with the “Early Access” label, it’s this one. If it had released as Early Access and only changed its status to released with the Atlas Rising patch it would have deflected much of its criticism and drama.

As for the next patch, I don’t trust anything the developers say, so I will delay judgement until I have concrete info on what exactly is in the patch.

I’m also glad Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is coming across to Xbox One as well, good times.

Likewise, the more people that get to play Hellblade, the better. Fantastic game.

Pretty underwhelming for me. True, it’s one of the few not afraid to innovate and there are many insteresting mechanics, but the game just became very fast a linear tedious slog, with an empty world, poor controls and often frustrating gameplay.

I’m probably 2-3 hours away from the finish line, but I doubt I will be able to force myself to play it again…

Wait what?! So the launch was pretty awful and they took their lumps, but I’ve been pretty pleased with their progress so far; it seems to me that they’re churning out some pretty decent content and the game is getting closer to the promise of what it should have been. If this is truly coming to my beloved XBone, then I’ll be a pretty happy camper!

While their original lies were awful and would prevent me from ever supporting the game, I do think it’s great that they’re updating the game so much for their fans.

Sounds good, can’t wait to see what it is! :)
