Camelot Unchained teases alpha start, ‘major feature’

Camelot Unchained

Yesterday’s Camelot Unchained update delivered quite a bit of good news to fans of the fantasy RvR sandbox. City State boss Mark Jacobs revealed the fourth iteration of the pre-alpha test checklist, several items of which have already been addressed, leaving the dev team in a good spot relative to its end-of-the-month alpha goal.

Jacobs says that potential snags may still delay the alpha launch a week or two, but he does promise “one major feature that wasn’t expected to be in until this summer” for the kickoff. “It is safe to say that by the time summer comes along, that major feature will be a lot further along than we thought it would be based on our last year’s schedule,” Jacobs writes.

Estranged Cyroselle ZenDadaist Mark Jacobs This is good! As an IT/Designer in addition to a long-term MMO addiction my hands have it bad as it is. :)

Estranged Mark Jacobs Koshelkin Yep. It’s all good. Working with Nvidia has been great and they have never and will never ask us to optimize/lock-in to their cards only.

Estranged Mark Jacobs Koshelkin Nope. We are using NVidia’s PhysX library on our server, not client as we’ve talked about in the past. The client is not being optimized for one board manufacturer and not others. OTOH, the server is. Luckily, you don’t have to buy your own server to play our game. :)

Cyroselle Mark Jacobs TehAcidBaron Thanks for all of that, much appreciated. I do spend a fair amount of time talking to players, Backers, etc. but as some posters here know, I’ve been doing it ever since I built my first MUD. As far as fielding criticism, well, I’m human too and I’ve never been afraid to admit fault. I do think that if we all were willing to do that more, the relationship between players <-> developers <-> publishers would be so much better. At the end of the day, I know we’ll make mistakes like everybody else but our studio won’t hide, deflect, obfuscate, etc. I’ll be here saying, “Yep. We messed up.” and be willing to take the heat for it just as I did when we had to delay Alpha. I explained why and stayed around here and the Forums answering questions, email, giving refunds (it’s been part of our policy since day 1), etc. And if I have to do it again, well, I will. It will suck having to do it but you shouldn’t take people’s money, whether through CF, investment or corporate) if you aren’t willing to also take the responsibility too. It’s as simple as that. It is a shame though that I’ve met too few people who feel the same way.

Thanks again for the kind words and support!

Estranged ZenDadaist Mark Jacobs That’s it, exactly… I want to *make* the fluff. If the fluff is particularly epic, and I have to work my fingers at my ‘board till they’re stiff and my eyes are watering, then it makes it that much more worth it!

These horrid dailies and gamble boxes just make me feel bitter and jaded and I want no part in them. Give me recipes! And if the ingredients include human ears and dwarf teeth, all the better.

Edany (AmberACurtis) I really must say, I LOVE ‘wasting time’ crafting in games. Well, if the crafting is good, I have high standards… but if it is, well, I would happily do that alone and provide gear and goodies for my guild.

NeterP Nor I. I think Mark Jacobs is pretty much a unicorn in his field. A very very real unicorn.

Mark Jacobs TehAcidBaron I really love it that you pop in and chat with us Mark, beyond just the idea of your game, it’s really what piqued my curiosity about Camelot Unchained in the first place – your great communication skills, and how good you are with fielding criticism when it comes across.
