Dave Georgeson talks all things MMOs

Have you missed the enthusiastic Dave Georgeson since he got the boot from Daybreak last month? Well, he certainly hasn’t gone into seclusion; Georgeson has been making the rounds talking about his experiences, and the latest sounding board for his wisdom is the Level Up Morning Show.

If you’ve got an hour-and-a-half to spare, you can listen to Georgeson comment on the MMO industry in length. Warning: This may trigger nostalgia and longing in some veteran EverQuest hearts.

Lathial MOGKash Well its pretty clear you are itching for a fight. I won’t give you one, my friend. Let’s leave it at that. Once again, good luck finding a show that suits your needs. Much respect, Kash.

MOGKash Lathial This does not have anything to do with “paying attention to the context”. The context is irrelevant. And, intent is irrelevant. Don’t you hate it when politicians or public figures (which you are trying to be) make racist / ignorant / hurtful comments and then “apologize” with “I never meant to offend anyone.”?

melissamcdon MOGKash Lathial Thanks Melissa :) As much as I try and stay away from commentary (feeding the trolls), I don’t see Lathial’s comment as feeding the trolls at all. You never quite know what people have experienced in their lives, their motivations or their trials. So although I try to be funny on the show, it will never overshadow my love and respect for the person next to me, including fellow gamers. This situation was certainly no different :) Thanks for the support, it is much appreciated!

MOGKash Lathial I’m impressed that you reached out with the apology, but in my humble opinion you had nothing to apologize for.

Well, the game DID come from a DnD campaign, so a certain amount of that makes sense.
I still have my suspicions that something happened in that office before Luclin launched, and that something is why the lore got so erratic. Luclin’s own story arc was clearly never finished, and that set a very problematic precedent. Post-PoP and EQ2 just exacerbated the issue.
Two very different design philosophies are present from that moment forward, and I imagine the direction EQ2 took to be more the original vision than anything that came after for EQ1.

ScottyKhan I was around posting how I thought a reboot should be handled before the 2013 reveal, and it’s like they read my mind about the deities especially, so I’ve been pretty happy.
I always thought the original lore was… charming, in that Billy’s-first-D&D-setting kind of way, but obnoxious to try to become immersed in and care about. Flavorful, but just too slipshod, and in many ways distractingly goofy. Like the god-awful gods!

Srsly tho, the new lore is a god-awful hack job. I’d go so far as to say it’s not even close enough to the source to justify being called a reboot, names aside.
I’m all for exploring alternate timelines and all that, but this is really a new IP at its core, with EQ names slapped on for mining credibility out of the nostalgia so many players harbor for the franchise.
Personally, I think they could have made a much more engaging gameplay experience by leveraging the new tech to allow players to live the backstory, instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater like they have.

The new lore is a pretty flagrant insult to the franchise. There, I said it.
