The Stream Team: First steps in ARK: Survival Evolved

14

Folks are talking about ARK: Survival Evolved, the dinosaur-infested sandbox that recently joined the ranks of early-access games. Sandbox? Dinosaurs? You just knew that would get the attention of MassivelyOP’s MJ! Although she’s not sure how much she wants to melee with a dino (really, punch the dinosaur in the face?!), she’s diving in to explore all the aspects of this new world. Join us live at 12:00 p.m. for her first look.

What: ARK: Survival Evolved
Who: MJ Guthrie
When: 12:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, June 20th, 2015

The show is over now, but we’ve embedded it here just for you. Don’t forget to check out past streams and playlists posted to our videos collection!

Bryan H Actually it looks quite good in the game. I just adjusted things down because streaming always takes a little toll.

pid PizzaDoh Think the tree punching has to do with rust having you use a rock first off when you spawn

PizzaDoh Yes. Hitting trees is wrong on many ways. For example, you get hurt (hands bleed) and you need a heal up again. That drains your food and you have to eat like crazy to keep up with the wounding. So you kind of HAVE to punch in the beginning because you have no other choice, but you also want to quit on it because it’s totally unnatural, just like in real life. As always, there have to be made some shortcuts, this is just a game, not a NASA emulator where everything must be 100% perfectly realistic.
On the graphical side I must say it beautiful and refined. On a GTX 970 I can set all settings to high and some to epic (would be above high or very high) and it looks better than in the video.
Interactions are smooth, like building a house is a charm, much better than in “Stranded Deep”. As an EA game, it’s really FAR FAR more polished and smooth than expected.
The only thing I’m kind of afraid of, is that a server can only host a limited number of players (I’ve seen at most 80 or so). So it’s not really an MMO, because “MASSIVE” kicks in at 10,000 for me.

I like this game a lot because it is more “flexible” than other survival games. What I mean with this is:
– you can obtain the same results in many ways
– if you do it the wrong way it takes more time and has adverse side-effects
– if you do it the right way you get better results in less time without side-effects.

Example: wood
– punch tree: hands bleed, health drains, food drains, little yield, long time
– pick on tree (stone pick): no bleeding, medium yield, mediium time
– hack on tree (stone hack): no belleding, high yield, little time

Example: flint
– punch stone: minimal to no results
– hack on stone (stone hack): medium results
– pick on stone (stone pick): best resutls

This goes on and on, with items food and so on. So, in the beginning you barely survive because you don’t know how to do stuff. By experimenting you slowly discover new ways and get better. At some point, you realize how silly it was to punch trees…

This game is highly addictive! So please do yourself a favor and don’t play it :)

Glad you dived into the biggest craze to hit twitch in some time. I managed to watch whilst fast forwarding when you hit a dino :D

On a plus side no having to buy mounts!

Thanks for the vid MJ o/

Wow you are literally punching trees in this game and they try to make it “realistic” which just makes it seem extra silly and painful as fuck.

Bryan H Visibly, yeah. But its a heck of a lot more playable than a lot of other EA games. Just really really needs optimization…
