How Neverwinter designs the critters that wreck you

Like a dragon, but, like... a danger dragon.
Neverwinter has an advantage in terms of enemy design, since years of Dungeons & Dragons have given it huge amounts of material to work with for new monsters, even if you disregard options like the xorn. That doesn’t mean it’s exactly easy to design new critters for the game, though, just that the hard work shifts away from figuring out what possible new creatures might inhabit the game. A new development blog is about just that, not coincidentally.

Once the team figures out which of the many creatures available it wishes to include in the game, what comes next is a matter of sketching out the possible designs and sculpting details in basic 3-D models. It’s a fairly involved process, the sort you can see in depth on the official site if you want to know how a monster goes from a twinkle in the design team’s eye to that irritating snarling thing you hate fighting.

The game’s Rise of Tiamat expansion landed on Xbox One earlier this week.

As a huge Forgotten Realms fan, I find it sad that the FR IP does not have a better representation in the MMO genre. Instead we are left with a game that is tarnished by bugs, continual exploits and constant, extremely annoying reminders to spend money no matter how much you’ve already spent…to the point that it absolutely destroys any submersion IMHO.
Last but not least, we have a Forgotten Realms MMO that can do no better than a total of 8-9 comments. Queue the crickets.

A shame if you ask me that my beloved Forgotten Realms can’t do any better than this. :(

I’ve played NW on both PC and XB 1.  The only thing they “design” in terms of “critters” is the same exact boss fight mechanic over and over and over and over:  they summon tons of adds!  Oh, and let’s not overlook the freeze-lag, especially on XB 1, and the 90-minute dungeon slogs.

Yeah, those “groundbreaking” critter mechanics are the main reason I uninstalled NW from both platforms, lol.

pcgneurotic I could never understand why they chose to do this. It’s one of the reasons I don’t play the game.

NW has (mostly) really gorgeous environments and superbly detailed mobs, so I find it such a shame there isn’t a free zoom, like in most other MMORPGs. The UI-free ‘cosmetic’ zoom is really only useful for zoning out the Barrens Chat in PE.
