Eldryth I try hard to reply to just about every comment I come across at various places. We are dedicated to community > all, and the only way that can happen is by being PART of the community. We’re gearing up to hit the convention circuits in 2016 to meet more of you guys and girls face to face, and be more than just a dev team hiding behind a company and trying to sink our teeth into “big money”. 
For us, it’s passion. We started building it to play ourselves, and along the way we’ve picked up a small but loyal following. Now, it’s growing. We’re doing some indie press, and we’ve got a lot more to show people coming up this fall. Still a long road ahead, but our team is strong, and that’s all that matters. 
And the beauty of running our own company is that I get to be as blunt as I want to the community. I see no reason to hide behind company speech or political correctness: I’m just a gamer like everyone else, and there’s no reason for me sugar-coat to try and win subscriptions….we have been, and always will be, a game for people who SHARE our vision, not for people who want to CHANGE our vision, or try and force us to make THEIR version of our game. 
At some point, once we grow larger, I won’t be able to reply to everyone personally, but I’ll do it while I can.

Eldryth  We are doing what Shroud of the Avatar is doing. A pre-order gets you 100 percent Early Access. We’ll be doing test weekends to start, rolling them out once a month. Then, as we get further along, we’ll open up the servers full time. 
We will have an additional, optional monthly subscription available that allows players to increase their pledge over time. Let’s say you want the perks of the 300 dollar level, but only have 200 today. You back at the 200 dollar pre-order tier, get those perks, and then sub for 10 a month…that starts earning you up to the 300 level. 
Players who pay a monthly sub have enhanced access to the forums + other benefits that we’ll be explaining once we launch our store…such as the ability to unlock a lifetime subscription offer after X amount of months backing us during development.
But you can get into the early access with a simple pre-order at the minimum level of 40 dollars, which is a bare-bones copy of the game for Volume I. From there, there are numerous tiers that go up depending on how involved players want to be and want kind of perks they want. Just like with Shroud of the Avatar.

TWAnderson I know you have to pre-order to help test, but is it a one-time purchase for the entirety of alpha and beta, or the Pathfinder Online model, where there will be a monthly fee even during early alpha?  I’ve looked through your articles, and even though I’m not finished I couldn’t find any word one way or the other.  I’m fine with having to purchase to test the game, I agree it’s best to make sure all the testers are serious about it.  I’m also fine with paying a sub fee for a finished game- in fact, even when I play a free-to-play game I typically end up paying for whatever VIP program they have (currently SWTOR).

However, if it’s going to cost at least $10 a month to test a very unfinished product, I think it’s definitely not worth it, and from the feedback Pathfinder Online tends to get, many would seem to agree with me.  It would also mean most sites will judge you as a released product right off the back, regardless of how early it is in development or what you call it- I’m not sure it will be possible for PFO to come back from the negative press it got as a result of that move, and if you do go that route the same will very likely happen to SoL.

Make no mistake, this game sounds amazing, and if it’s just a one-time purchase to be able to test it, I’ll be backing as soon as the store goes up.  Just found out about it today, but it sounds just like what I’ve been wanting for a long time- very interested to see if that kind of game is as great as I (and many others seem to) remember, or if it really is just nostalgia like some say.  I’m definitely hopeful that it’s the former.

Also want to add that your comments have done a lot to make me more optimistic- never seen a game where the devs can respond to almost every comment, and are so honest that they’re willing to speak so bluntly :)

Honestly, the more games that are out there for various groups, the better, I just hope you guys can keep the lights on for those that do fit into your vision and invest their time and money in you.  If you feel you can do that, come hell or high water, I wish you all the success in the world. :)

Omedon TWAnderson Line with more hugs Michael18 We’re a niche game, we know it, we have our target audience, we know the numbers we want to hit and expect to hit, and we don’t really give a shit about anyone who doesn’t fit into our vision or believe that we can do what we are setting out to do. 
Nothing wrong with healthy level of “hmmmmm” given how many AAA studios haven’t been able to pull off what they wanted, but they were also games with 50+ million dollar budgets and investors/publishers to pay off. We aren’t, and we don’t. It’s just us, putting in sweat equity, and what we need to survive and what is realistic for us in terms of numbers is incredibly small in comparison. 
We also have no desire to sway your opinion. If you want to wait until launch, go for it. No one is putting a gun to your head and saying “pre-order our game!!!” 
If you can see our vision, great. If not, /shrug. We’re here for those who can and do :)

Let me start by saying that your candor is refreshing, if blunt, and you obviously know your niche, and that’s good.

You do of course realize that asking for this degree of “take us seriously” commitment is something you’ll really only have earned the right to do once you’re launched, established and competitive, yes?  It just seems, to me, that the market is way too saturated for a new game to come out of the gate swinging with a model that’s essentially “give us your lives or GTFO.”
I am a guy who recently moved from MMOs to Roll20 D&D. I get the session-based play, I do, but tomorrow our schedules could get really busy, we might take a month off, and we all know this.  As a sub game, asking for so much time and commitment, how do you fit in this saturated market?  
I mean, if Carbine couldn’t do it….  I’m not saying it’s impossible, but you have a business model for adults (Kids expect F2P, adults get the need for the investment of subscription) and a time-investment expectation for college kids, with a high focus on codependency.  There’s knowing your niche, and then there’s imagining it.

And before you say “dig deeper,” no.  I’m asking you, as a precursor to having the interest to dig deeper.  I’ve already given you more time than I probably should at this early juncture, but I wanted to properly articulate myself in a respectful manner.

If I want to learn how to play the piano, I have to put in hard work AND countless hours in order to build up my talent. The same if learning how to draw, or paint, or master any craft, or code, or play guitar, or etc. 
I don’t just magically learn how to play the piano simply from “effort”. I also have to invest hours upon hours and in some cases years of my time to get good at it and earn the rewards from that particular craft/art/skill. 
Combat is such that crowd control will play a huge part in the early stages of the game. Magic is fleeting, everyone starts off with mundane armor/weapons, no magic-users to start, which means no in-combat healing until players start earning Relics, which means planning, strategy, and forethought to pulling and combat scenarios so players don’t die during.

Line with more hugs Dig in a little deeper. The camps & caravans system is set in place so that players who can only do an hour or so here, or an hour or so there, can still meet up with their friends on a regular basis and play through their campaign ala the Fellowship of the Ring or the Heroes of the Lance, plus have time to meet up with 2-3 other friends for overland content that doesn’t take a lot of time commitment. 
Dungeons and raids, on the other hand…you’re going to need chunks of time, and you’ll need to plan ahead for those, just like a D&D session. You schedule it with your group, you slot aside the Saturday afternoon, and you go for 3-6 hours (or more). That’s our niche.
