Lord British’s death captured for posterity in Shroud of the Avatar PvP event

Shroud of the Avatar fans recently witnessed a bit of history: the in-game death of Lord British! During a 12-hour livestream event and pledge drive, three folks had the opportunity to face a dev in a PvP battle. While the devs, of course, were asked to remove all god-mode and dev hacks, Richard Garriott kept his stats relatively high. However, he did say he was “easily the most vulnerable I have ever been in the history of the game when we had the capability to protect me.”

Spectators began to gang up on Lord British when he nearly one-shot his opponent in his first battle. Then one announcer issued a challenge: “I don’t even think the whole audience has it in them,” and soon the stands started to empty and join in the fray. The result? The on-air death of Lord British. Immortalizing the moment for all of posterity, the nearly hour-long clip of the PvP event was saved, and we’ve added it here so you can watch it all transpire for yourself. To skip ahead to the death scene, jump to the 47 minute mark. You can also read up on Lord British’s first death — an assassination during an Ultima Online beta event.
