Defiance’s TV series has been canceled, but the game will live on [Updated]

So much for transmedia synergy.

Syfy announced Friday that after three seasons, it is canceling Defiance. The show was part of a cross-media initiative to tie together a television series and an MMO, the latter of which is still being run by Trion Worlds.

The channel praised the show even as it declined to renew it for a fourth season: “Defiance was a truly groundbreaking series, delivering an immersive, cross-platform experience that transcended the television screen in a way that viewers had never seen before.”

Trion CM Kiwibird addressed the players on the forums over the weekend, confirming Trion’s long-running promise that the game’s fate is not the show’s fate:

Ark hunters,

We’ve had a great time working closely with the team of stellar writers, designers, producers, and actors on the Defiance TV show. Like many of you, we’ve all enjoyed the stories they told week in and week out. Let’s treat this as a fond farewell, in celebration of a successful three year run of a show that broke a lot of new ground and brought an incredible quality experience to its viewers.

As for the game and its future, Defiance is Trion’s IP and the game will continue exactly as before. The show has always been a fantastic and interesting partner, but the two were always meant to be able to stand on their own, which is why the show was primarily set in St. Louis and the game in the SF Bay Area.

In fact, we’re happy to announce that we’re looking forward to the upcoming public testing of the Aquarium at Monterey, the next big instance coming to Defiance. There we’ll flesh out the Shrill storyline and put the Dark Matter in a whole new light.

There are plenty of stories that need to be told in this world, and the team’s extremely excited to continue telling them.

Source: Variety. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
Updated 10/19/2015 to clarify that the game is not being affected by the show’s cancelation.

Lights_andMusic i’m also suprised shows as The Walking Dead still goes on, i think even the zombies are so bored by those characters, their story and their lousy dialogues that they just ignore them, so unlucky they continue to live. Pity.
The Walking Dead is so bad that could have actually been SyFy.

Tithian A Dad Supreme Parks and Rec. Babylon 5.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer (arguable never got good).  The revamp of Dr. Who (2003? 2005?)…omg the freaking X-files !! haha    All shows with pretty garbage first seasons

Dishonorable mention for Walking Dead (which I love!) which has a really rough first season imho (and probably at least partially explains why all the writers got fired).

alexjwillis I’m not saying defiance was one of these shows, but perhaps you could elaborate as to the plethora of “so many excellent science fiction and fantasy TV shows out there these days” ?

I…cant think of a single one that’s markedly (leaps and bounds) above defiance.  Again, not saying that defiance was great, but I’m challenging your claim that TV is saturated with great sci-fi shows.

To everyone in these comments writing they  “can’t believe that this show got greenlit and lasted 3 years/seasons”  or that “i never got how any SyFy TV series got ever to be really produced, figure going on beyond its 1st season”  and ALLLLLL the other similar comments using this type of reasoning:

I’d like to remind you that Two and a Half Men ran for TWELVE seasons.  If you think your standard of TV is somehow too high to be bothered with a SyFy show, I assure you, it definitely is not.

carsont Grave Knight alexjwillis Ah, that does make a bit sense considering the nature of that fiction. However, there are plenty of online fiction that are great such as Paranatural or Schlock Mercenaries. And though much of those fanfictions stories are terrible, every now and then there are some gems.

thatchefdude I mean, it’s the syfy channel. There are reasons why I literally forgot for over a year that I even get the station.

Grave Knight carsont alexjwillis Actually it was an example to the contrary, unfortunately I noticed it far after I could actually correct it – and attempted to do so above. It was an example of why going to the internet is NOT the cure for creative woes in TV & movie land, unfortunately my typo changed my meaning to the exact opposite.

Although I do like the Defiance game, the crossover never came together in the way they promised.

Supposedly there was going to be one big server to begin with and that was cancelled when Microsoft refused to let games being played on their system play with games being played on Playstations and such at the time.  So Trion gave everybody their own specific version which already broke the system.

Supposedly we’d all have one big server, and we could affect events in the TV show by what we did in game.  We were supposed to be able to play certain parts of the game that depending on who won what – it would alter the way the TV show went.

They claimed that the TV show would have an affect on the game (which they just ended up adding a few missions based on the TV show in the end) and that the game would have an affect on the TV show which would be directly influenced and controlled by how we played.  That just never happened.  The big experiment they supposedly were doing never came together.

It was just this big broken promise.  It wasn’t ground breaking.  The whole synergy thing just died from the start.  All they did was add a few missions from the TV series into the game.  That’s nothing new or ground breaking.

I really did enjoy the game still despite the broken promises and missing features.
