Activision-Blizzard’s TV and movie studio taps creative lead

Back in November, Activision-Blizzard announced it was launching a TV and movie studio to build out its franchises. Former Disney exec Nick van Dyk was tapped to co-lead the endeavor, and today, we know who his creative co-lead will be: Academy Award-nominated Hollywood producer Stacey Sher. Sher’s producer credits include Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Gattaca, among 45 total projects.

The company told investors last fall that its first productions would be an animated Skylanders Academy TV show and and “a robust cinematic universe based on the Call of Duty franchise,” with a target date of 2018 or 2019.

I sincerely do not understand why anyone would think a “call of duty cinematic universe” would be a good idea. ESPECIALLY when you look at all the other IP’s they have, i mean shit Starcraft anyone? love or hate the games a lot of blizzard and activison ips have legs for tv and film that call of dutys “PRESS F TO DEW THE ‘DEW AND FEEL FEELS BRUH” simply doesn’t have.
Even in the mainstream meat head dudebro contingent Call of Duty is a declining ip as a game and shock horror: it aint getting played for the story to begin with.

It would be like if marvel started thier cinematic stuff with something like speedball or power man instead of the avengers. Sure theres fans of it but christ is there so much more interesting stuff in your library to make media out of.

-and this is coming from someone who isnt touching a single blizzard game right now because honestly i dont really care for any bar Diablo right now and ive just burnt out on it, so without any fanboy brand loyalty i still just wonder why they think generic military shooter is the hot ticket when military war films set beyond WW2 were never that popular to begin with and the current “rag tag team of good old boys in iraq” trope has been pushed in everything from 3 kings to transformers and the mainstream is sick of that as well. I just cannot understand beyond some assumption that its game audience will all go and watch it that its a money maker.

and unless the audience can all pound mountain dew and “ritos” and teabag the screen while screaming for people to follow them on twitch i think there is a level of interactive disconnect they arent considering here.

I mean shit the no brainer would be some Overwatch cg thing to tie in with the show and “catch em young” so to speak and you would assume old bobby K in his money cave deep in the underdark where he waits for gehenna would be hot on that kind of idea over “brown and bloom shootey explodey fun time: the universe”

Unless i am that detached from mainstream audiences that people actually want “shootbangs: men of wars, brotherhood of guys” again and again every year for the next decade.

ManastuUtakata paragonlostinspace Damonvile It’s a very good picture of both of them. I still can’t believe he’s gone, I really thought he’d outlive me for sure. That picture is five/six years ago and he looked great. Damn cancer. (sigh)

I foresee an Overwatch show or movie series of some sort. It just seems like the perfect vessel for delivering the IP the same way they announced it, with that awesome, Pixar-like cinematic.  Plus, Starcraft movies/shows?  Heck yes!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but story-wise wouldn’t making something based on CoD just as well be called “Generic War Movie?”

It’s a video game movie. All video game movies suck. That’s just a rule.
