RuneScape helps its players through the wilderness

RuneScape’s Wilderness area is a dangerous and tantalizing area, full of hazards and lucrative opportunities to grow your character (and his or her coffers). However, the devs are worried that the zone has proven to be too intimidating for some adventurers.

Enter Wilderness tasks, a series of quest lines that encourages players to dip their toes into the area while rewarding them with items and abilities to make further exploration more palpable. The first tier of tasks rewards both an XP lamp and a powerful Wilderness sword, which Jagex hopes will help to get players hooked on the area.

The studio has improved the Wilderness in several other areas, including beefing up its skilling spots, adding bankers to the region, and creating probably one of the most tedious — yet tempting — MMO minigames ever.

“A pair of switches has been added to the forest in the south-eastern edge of the Wilderness. Rack up the highest score you can by pressing one after the other as many times as possible without dying. Your exploits will be broadcast at the following press milestones 10, 100, 1000, 10,000, and so on. The chain of presses ends when you are killed or log out.”
