The Daily Grind: Do you read MMO patch notes?

Item by item.

I read the patch notes. I’ve always read the patch notes. When I was first playing Final Fantasy XI and you had to deal with an awkward client that didn’t like to scroll with the mousewheel to read patch notes, I read the patch notes. I even read too much into the patch notes on some occasions, which is neither here nor there; the point is that I read the patch notes.

Of course, some of that is just helpful because it’s my job, and while this may stun you, there are a lot of MMOs out there which I do not play. Reading the patch notes is the difference between understanding what’s changed in EverQuest II this time around and looking blankly at the computer screen. But I have found, over time, that even among players it’s not universal. There are people who don’t read Final Fantasy XIV‘s detailed patch notes or World of Warcraft’s lengthy item-by-item breakdown of each change, leaving it to people such as myself to explain what actually happened.

So what about you, dear readers? Do you read MMO patch notes? Or do you just wait for a summary and ask questions if you’re not sure about one change or another?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
