Oh, well then.

Do you ever wish that more imported games would just launch without fanfare? Record of Lodoss War Online has apparently done just that; Gravity Interactive announced its launch in the West last week without fanfare or much flare. Heck, it’s without even much in the way of a fleshed-out site, as the official site is still missing a gallery and in many places is still referring to another game. But it’s there!

For those following along at home, Record of Lodoss War Online is an MMO based on the eponymous anime, which concerns itself with a band of humble adventurers overthrowing an evil overlord. You know, as you do. You’ve got the usual lineup of fantasy characters and races, but if that’s your cup of tea, you can try that out today. Probably.

I played the game when it released a few months ago. I guess it got rereleased? Game is a lot better than anything else that’s come out recently. Very old school, but fun. Would play it exclusively if I had more time.

While I think the opening sentence was rhetorical, I think launching a game without fanfare might be a good way to circumvent common launch issues like queues, crashes, and disconnects. Plus you could say you’re pulling a Beyonce and get that sweet street cred.

Bleh I’ll try it. I’m not playing anything special.

Actually, the first anime came relatively late. First there was the RPG scenario, then a series of “RPG transcripts” (transcripts of pen-and-paper RPG sessions somewhat similar to light novels), then the first handful of novels, and only then the first anime. After that there were more light novels, some manga series, and more anime series.

Before you get your hopes up, this is the gameplay:

Its sad when a game comes out these days with Diablo II era graphics, and gameplay that would of gotten a poor score back then.

This is just another shameless cash grab. Move along. Move along.

Honestly, it looks a lot better than the shit that comes out nowadays with all their auto-battle crap.

Does auto-battle crap make it go from 32 bit to 16? o.O

That truly looks and sounds awful.

“Retro” MMOs seem to be a thing in Korea right now … And I say “retro” because Lineage 1, which was the firt major Korean MMO, was basically Diablo 2 rebuilt with UO’s online world mechanics.

…oh, that’s what Smed was trying to do before he cancel his project for bigger endeavors. That is, make it a thing here! O.o

I like the graphics, i really do, but the gameplay? the video is not encouraging, i want to add 2D or Diablo-style MMO to games i play daily, but so far all the games i tried are either so old or so grindy.

The download is so small that I’m going to go ahead and try it anyway. I don’t want to judge it too much before playing, but seeing that everybody looks like clones of each other isn’t making me feel super optimistic.

It does look like a game that would easily work on mobile – smaller size, doesn’t take nearly the power to run (I think anyway, maybe its terribly inefficient I don’t know yet), etc. It possibly should have been released there instead.

The download looks as if it’s not even 3 gigs total (downloader and patcher download too) so I’ll see soon enough.

Nice, Loved the anime, One thing this mmo could have is lore. With all the spinoffs in the same universe, magic, jobs, and such. If it adapts it will do well, maybe get t a new anime or magma.

More free-to-play MMOs should get the magma. I could make you a list.
