That EA and Nexon announcement is a FIFA-sized kick in the you-know-where

Well. Talk about an intentional foul.

That “mystery MMO” that EA and Nexon were teasing? It turns out that it was merely for FIFA Online 4. Great news if you’re a die-hard soccer fan visiting Massively OP for some reason, but a complete bummer for everyone else hoping to see an ambitious RPG come out of these studios.

This paragraph is going to relay details about the game, but don’t take that for our actually caring about it. The game builds upon five years of FIFA Online 3 feedback and will incorporate motion capture, better grass, and the soulcrushing monetization that is the hallmark of any EA franchise. The game will be part of Nexon’s presentation at G-Star this month, so you know where to go to deliver your stony silence in person.

We’ve got videos for you after the break — if you can see them through your tears.

Now wait a minute. Online Multiplayer, we routinely argue, is generally all we require to call something an MMO, or at least, that’s where the debate starts. These games have career (RP) modes too.

Surely we aren’t going to say that a sports game can’t be an MMO?

Soulcrushing monetization indeed. And I’m supposed to be disappointed by this news?

They even had me checking their “countdown page” at http://newproject.nexon.com/ … guess it wasn’t so bad that it has only been showing an error message since yesterday.
Apparently, not all hype is good hype. Who knew…

Well, I guess for EA it makes sense. Phat Kash with Fifa.

I approve of the tone of this article.

What? This is great news.

First, the Fifa series is great. Second, they don’t taint the MMO scene anymore for a while.

Win-win. Who the hell would want a MMORPG from these two hellish companies.

Crushed? Most popular sport in the world receives a new online offering?

That is a goldmine. Why make a MMO instead?

MRW you said “This paragraph is going to relay details about the game, but don’t take that for our actually caring about it.”

The Kotaku article on EA’s closing of Visceral is sort of like the drumroll leading up to this announcement, with lines like “EA executives are like, ‘FIFA Ultimate Team makes a billion dollars a year.’ Where’s your version of that?”
