The Daily Grind: Are you surprised by your MMO /played time?

26 days, 18 hours, and 34 minutes.

That’s the current /played time for my World of Warcraft Hunter, which is one of my more enduring characters in that game. I’m sure it’s not even the most, but still, nearly a month of my life has been spent playing this one character. That kind of rocks me back on my heels and astounds me at how much time we can rack up in MMOs in increments.

That’s probably why I don’t like to look at /played too often — I don’t like to fall into a pit of self-criticism and become depressed about my hobby. I’m sure I’d have high numbers with any activity that I perform semi-regularly.

For today’s discussion, let us know what your /played is for one of your main characters right now — and if you’re actually surprised by the result!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Nope. I’ve always been vaguely aware of how long I’ve played a game. Even without Steam hours :p
My AO main was sitting at something like 400 days before she became unplayable (still not fixed yet…).

EDIT: that’s just on that one character in that one game, mind you. Across all my AO characters it’s well over 1000. And then there’s my 4000+ hours in Rift and 3000ish in Warframe and I don’t even want to -think- about Eve Online since 2004 ;)

393 days on my main druid in EQ (also 200+ on various alts)… I haven’t even played in like 4 years! But ask any old school raider and you’ll get a number like that… probably higher!

I was when I checked my RIFT’s… that was the only time it was far more than I remembered. I realized RIFT has to be my most played game ever. (I don’t have a screenshot but it was somewhere between 3k and 4k hours IIRC)

There’s a few other games I played a lot but there I had a pretty good idea of how much it was.

I would say that my playtime in Wurm Online is pretty extreme. If you look closely at this screenshot, you can see that I started playing 1484 days ago which was November 23rd 2013, so just over 4 years ago. Days played in the game: 333. *cough cough cough cough* And this doesn’t even include my other characters, nor does it include the massive hours I’ve put into the Ultima Nostalgia project in Wurm Unlimited. Does it “surprise” me? Well no, because it’s the best thing since Ultima Online and highly underrated. You know how Bree always refers to Ultima Online in all the podcasts? Well that’s exactly how I am with Wurm. Sure, it’s ugly and looks outdated (well except they just introduced a new graphics renderer, so it’s looking so much prettier now), but the things you can do in that game are mind blowing. For instance, in this screenshot you see me overlooking the crops I’m growing on my very own island. And everything man made was built with my own two hands. See the mountain in the background? You can actually climb that with your own two feet. No blockers, no invisible walls. Well, I better not get started or else my gushing will never end. But yeah, I think the only other MMOs which had crazy playtimes from me were UO and WoW in addition to this one.

377+ days in Bdo. Just over 9000 hours. In less than 2 years on my main character. Not sure if I should be proud or disgusted by that. Oh an hello, first post after a year of reading.

Dose /played in BDO count AFK activities too or only “real” time spent playing the game?

It counts afk as well. It’s such a clever model they have. Even when you come back to the game, you’re less likely to turn it off to play something else. You just pick up and resume.

That “clever model” was half the reason I quit. I really don’t need games influencing me like that.

Not so much MMO, but I have over 400 hours in Overwatch on my main Pharah. I dont play any other character.

I would have to say way back in 2002 on my adventurer in Anarchy Online. I was in a guild here in Boston with a bunch of guys that went to M.I.T. We would use a computer room on the campus on Friday nights and go till morning. Crazy fun with those guys back then.

35 days 5 hours on my Sorc in ESO (he is new). Nah, not really. I know how much I invest into this ‘hobby’ of mine.

It says in FFXIV that I have 94 days and 15 minutes, but I think that might be lower than the time I’ve actually played since I’ve been playing the same character since 2.0 early access but transferred servers a few years ago. I don’t know if FFXIV resets your /playtime if you transfer.

Anyway, I want the number to be high, and I actually enjoy the idea that I put a lot of hours into games. Not only do I view it as time well spent, but it also makes me feel like I’m doing a good job managing my free time. Usually I have no problem getting the necessary parts of life done, but then I feel like I waste my leisure time by not actually doing anything enjoyable. So here’s hoping that number gets a lot higher in 2018!

I think my most terrible/awesome record was for Dota Allstars, back in WC3 days, before it went stand alone.

There was a program called Dota-Keys, that let the user change the default hot keys for the game and kept the recorded games.

At one point I had over 10,000 dota replays on my HD. Figgure between 20-60 mins per game.
