Black Desert is celebrating its second western birthday with a new minimap and absolute skills

It’s hard to imagine an MMORPG without a minimap in 2018. But how many of them have a 3-D minimap? That’s just one of the things Black Desert is rolling out today for its second anniversary patch.

“The 3D Minimap is in quarter view by default but when you are in an area where the topography is difficult to make out with the default view, the 3D Minimap will automatically switch to top view,” explains Kakao. “When it is difficult to navigate with the 3D Minimap because of the topography blocking your view of your surroundings or your destination, the Rotate Minimap feature could become helpful.”

Today’s update also adds the promised absolute skills to each class, with the noble goal of making pre-awakened classes not suck, plus a long list of super sale items in the cash shop in honor of the birthday, including a paid weight limit increase.

The servers are up now, and if you’re getting that “error code 5” on Steam, don’t panic; Kakao is on it. The studio is kicking off what it’s calling Lavientia’s Special Accessories event today too.

Today was like Christmas and only missed having Lahn! Can’t wait to play with Absolute skills. Got some nice boss armor from the gift they gave us and played around with my new “hippie” gear freebies. I haven’t seen them do sales like this before. Everything’s on sale currently, just about.

Since I’m waiting for Lahn to come out before spending more money on outfits, I’ll take advantage of the sales on furniture to get some prop sets I’ve been wanting for awhile. Just have to figure out which items to use the 10 and 20% coupon on, that goes on top of the current running sales. I’m excite!

I just went back to it this weekend because I needed to find something to kill time with while waiting for Bless.

This game is so mismanaged that it should be criminal.

The 3D mini map is a novelty for sure. The larger UI updates today involve the secondary Escape Menu and general UI overhaul. This includes a customizable dashboard and many cool new preset options to swap around with. The biggest new addition to the UI is the Notification Window for Market registrations and preorders for items you have on notification. This lets you see the last 20 notifications which is very nice if you have multiple notifications going off constantly to go back and look when something got listed.

The Absolute Skills are a big game changer for class metas. Classes like the Ranger who were considered kinda bottom tier classes will see a skyrocketing advantage now that their base tool kit is on par with Awakening level damage.

The Cash shop sale is alright, but a lack of function category on sale is disappointing as always. Their 3 for the price of 2 pet bundle is more interesting for newer players. The maximum weight is something long anticipated as it’s been active in KR for a while now.

I find it a strange game. I’ve been playing a couple of weeks or so on and off, haven’t really got totally hooked although I can see the appeal. However, I find the combat ridiculously easy with no need at level 18 (warrior) for more than a simple button-mash with most of the skills I’m learning being totally unnecessary and with no quest boss mob yet that has inflicted a single damaging hit on me. I guess it must get harder later on, and perhaps the PvE isn’t intended to be centred on the combat which might I suppose be tougher in PvP. Meanwhile there are so many other aspects of the game that are utterly bewildering without scouring the internet for some sort of guide. Lovely looking game, but strange to play even by Korean standards!

From 1-30 you can pretty much get away with leveling entirely with auto attack. It’s been scaled down to make 1-50 pretty effortless. By around 40 or so your gear level won’t be caught up and you should start to have to actually use abilities to kill quicker.

What a wonderful world they have built. If you’ve got the PC muscle, it’s a really beautiful place to spend some time.
