Fortnite’s Avengers Infinity War promo event is live today

Yesterday, Epic teased a Marvel Avengers Infinity War promo in Fortnite, and it wasn’t super clear who was getting the better end of that partnership. It’s live today, and I think the answer is… the players? Your goal is basically to beat down Thanos.

“Early in the match, a meteor will land in the storm safe zone, delivering the Infinity Gauntlet. Any player who uses the Infinity Gauntlet will transform into Thanos. Stats are recorded for this LTM and can be found in the Solo tab. If Thanos is eliminated, the Gauntlet will fall to the ground, free for the taking. If it sits unused for too long, it will disappear until another meteor appears. Last player standing will be the victor!”

Does any of this make a lick of sense? Not really, but yay video game crossovers.

“This collaboration started as a simple phone conversation between Epic and Marvel over a mutual appreciation for Fortnite and Avengers,” Epic writes. “We worked closely over the following weeks to bring these two worlds together and landed on the Limited Time Mashup, Infinity Gauntlet. When we saw the movie last weekend, which was incredible, we were even more excited.”

PvE players, there’s naught but bug fixes for you, plus a hacksaw.

It’s literally just a version of “Juggernaut” where you get to be the super powerful Thanos BUT you don’t want to ever get it too early or everyone will just be shooting you out of the sky.

There’s no special promotional purchases or anything, so it’s cool for what it is but it’s underwhelming for a tie-in as it’s pretty much nothing but an advertisement using a game mode that doesn’t have much replay value as the strategy is to essentially wait until ~10 remain before trying to grab the gauntlet yourself.

I’m guessing it would be too much of a legal and financial hassle to incorporate actual cosmetics/vanity of any sort. They probably just got the permission to use Thanos’s likeness and some voice clips for a game mode and that was it.

Marvel has got zero super hero games on the market right now & Epic has a very super hero type game (that now actually has super hero mechanics) … I highly doubt that this started as a innocuous phone call and that Epic will have a full on Marvel game out at next E3.

Well they’ve got mobile games iirc? That’s what makes the moolah. Also Fortnite’s super hero mechanics are mostly just “jump higher with slower falling” when using the space crack rocks. Thanos can hop up in the air and hover there while firing a laser beam or slamming down into the ground akin to what you can do in Saints Row 4. There’s some super hero mechanics but they’re pretty minor unless Epic expands on it.

My guess is that it simply was cheap and easy to quickly whip up Thanos in the game vs trying to go through hoops to get licensed cosmetics and such. Doubt this means Epic got some special partnership and go-ahead to do a Marvel game, but who knows. I’m sure if they really want to try and corner more of the Battle Royale market they could do a superhero Battle Royale mode.

So, I played and I became Thanos. But then, I went down like Boba Fett.

In short, it is great. It really is. If you kill Thanos, and the Infinity Gauntlet drops. Whoever picks it up next gets to be Thanos.

He can fly, has a smash like the Hulk and a laser beam of death. But, it is you against the world so your run will be short.

For me, and became the destroyer of worlds. I took off to the most populated area near me. I landed with a giant smash, killed a couple of players near me and then got taken out by gunfire from behind. The whole thing lasted about 3 minutes. Lol!

Went out like Boba. Sadly….

Yeah you pretty much aren’t going to win with it unless you grab it when 10 or fewer people are left. Kills replenish his shields so when there are few enough players you basically become unstoppable as they have to shoot through 1000 total health and he can get 300 back (in the form of shields, not actual health) from simply killing someone.

Yup. Thought about that.

I hear if you play in this event there is a fifty percent chance you could die in real life before you finish the match.

True story.

We going to need a spoiler tag alert for the messages here? You know so people who have not seen the movie don’t get hit with any potential spoilers?

Meh, a 2 week old movie based on a 20+ year old comic book series…

To be fair a lot of people probably haven’t actually read the comic material.

And that’s only assuming that the movie follows the material. The MCU hasn’t really done everything 100% like the comics.

For me, it follows close enough that I don’t get many surprises in MCU movies. Not close enough in the sense of bringing the stories unchanged, but rather that each movie reuses elements of a handful of older stories; nearly every plot twist pulled up to now in the MCU has been used in some older Marvel comic.

But, well, since I was a child I have been reading dozens of books and hundreds of comic books per year; it’s fairly rare for any story in the genres I care about to surprise me anymore.
