WRUP: Dispatch from E3 2049 edition

113
This is what it looks like

We sent this message back in time from 2056 in the hopes that someone could avert this horrifying future. E3 grew so slowly almost no one realized what was happening until it was too late. E3 2049 started in June of 2050, because E3 2048 lasted the whole of that year and well into 2049. It’s been raging for six years now. Six years of unplayable demos, promises about titles that will radically change before launch, plastic smiles on presenters, and hideous, unconscionable attempts at being hip.

And Nintendo is still promising things that aren’t going to actually come out for half a decade. Their fans insist that they’re doing well.

You can change this now. You can stop the spread of E3 as it keeps covering more days. Stop it before we are all lost in this barren wasteland. Also, make sure to take part in What Are You Playing, because that’s how the aliens decide who get the laser eyes. Yeah, that’s 2033. That year was pretty wild anyway.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): It’s the start of E3 coverage, so I may get to play some Anthem on Saturday. The other conferences are less hands-on, so I’ll probably just do some Pokemon Go since it’s another water festival, and there are so many shiny whales! My harpoon is ready, but after buying an ultra box for the third event in a row, I may need to throw myself on it! If only Niantic had released Squirtle Squad this time!

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Definitely Trove, but I’m also doing one of those Justin-inspired play-all-the-things where I go through a bunch of stuff on Steam and test it out. So far I’ve done several games, including a couple of mini-MMOs, so that’ll be fun to talk about on the podcast!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Aside from working on my last alt (out of character slots) on Final Fantasy XIV and finishing up my Final Fantasy XI adventure, I’m also going to be continuing on in Granblue Fantasy; hit a really smooth patch and I’ve been flying up, so best to keep up the momentum.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): It’s a post-apocalyptic weekend for Justin! Fallout 4 and Fallen Earth are both getting some play by me, for no obvious reason whatsoever. No sirree. Just a coincidence. Also, Star Trek Online’s expansion just landed and I should probably get around to doing that. Think they will include the apocalypse?

MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie, blog): I plan on spending time building this weekend — in Conan Exiles and in ARK: Survival Evolved. Also, I will likely also be building with Duplo blocks! After finishing up the South African storyline, I also want to go back and finish up my completion of the earlier zones in Secret World Legends. With the rest of my time I plan to check out the the gardening/farming sim that is My Yard.

Your turn!

So, i did a sketchdump, with the drawings i usually do on the bus. It’s way better than just posting one at a time.

Also, i drew a friend. C: Her name is Milena.

Anyway, gaming-wise: I was really into EQ2, but the game is too big and i was also playing FE on the side. So for now, i’m playing Fallen Earth and Warhammer: Return of Reckoning when i want to scrath a pvp itch. I do plan to go back to EQ2 later.

And while i game, my kitties play on my feet. Life is good <3

Nice sketches. Milena looks great. Bet she loved it.

She liked it, can’t say much, she’s quite the introvert so outside liking it, she didn’t really say much.

E3! Saddened by Bioware and Anthem (mixed opinion, but negative feeling for the moment), I’m investigating becoming a ‘fan’ (well trying to :P) of old Bethesda and CDPR RPGs instead. I also got games like Numenera and Pillars of Eternity lying around!

Tried Dauntless. Haha, not in this state, no thanks.

Playing and enjoying EQ2, no other game can make me go all “ooh shiny”, this collection system is so addictive, also i love that most classes have some kind of support role, not just pure DPS.

I loved EQ2 for a long time, but I sort of lost heart with the franchise when EverQuest Next was cancelled.

EverQuest II is still a good game, despite its relative age, but I just can’t seem to find the impulse to go back there — at least not until I hear some positive news about the future of the franchise.

But hey, that’s just my opinion. Enjoy!

Playing BDO as my main MMO still. Got my Lahn awakened, got her main and sub- weapons, now just camping every Karanda and waiting for the elusive Dande weapon to drop. In between I’ve been working on gathering Knowledge and finishing up quest lines in Mediah so I can shoot off to Valencia when that sweet, sweet Dandelion drops!

As an honorable mention, been logging into ESO since the dailies were implemented and that’s about all the interest I can drum up on that right now. ESO is a good game, just not something I want to play while I’m enjoying something else!

I’m still working my way through the new God of War. It’s a series I thought should have been laid to rest, but I have to admit I’m enjoying this game a lot. And it’s one of those games that doesn’t mess around with its difficulty. Hard actually means hard.

I also bought Vampyr and am enjoying it a lot, too. It’s my kind of vampire lore. Can’t say much more than that, as I’m not very far yet. But what I’ve played has been really good.

That’s about it, really. Persona 5 and Witcher 3 are on hold while I play God of War (I borrowed it from a friend so I want to give it back as soon as I can). After I finish GoW, though, I might pull the trigger on resubbing to FFXIV. I wanted to wait until I finished P5, but I miss it too much.

I’d be interested in hearing more opinion on Vampyr as you progress, especially if the story and characters are decent.

Indeed. While I’m normally not a vampire fan, the late (heh), lamented Vampire: Bloodlines rpg remains one of the best story-driven computer-game rpgs I’ve played. If this new Vampyr game has enough of the older game’s quality about it, it may well be worth a look.

You gotta play what’s fun, Noble, otherwise, what’s the point?

You want FFXIV? You go get it! Life is short, and it makes one cry too often. You’ve got to take your joys where you can find them! :-)

Im still playing Project Ascension (custom WoW server). Its war effort there now, server getting ready to AQ opening and lots of new players joined. So fun times. Meanwhile collecting footage for my third PvP movie. I want to add some world PvP this time. Here is the second one, not sure if I shared before:

even the classic assets hold up really well thanks to the art style.

it’s an old meme of mine that every “pretty” mmo hasn’t stood the test of time as well as wow has. i mean there’s kind of diminishing returns on that but definitely true during the peak of the wow clone era. >>

I think WoW and FFXIV are the only major mmo’s I’ve never tried.

Reader

Altho Ascension has a great core concept, the execution is subpar.

How many Titan Grip Bladestormbots with Shadowstep/Blink/Charge/Intervene/Intercept have you met in bgs?

Reader
Oleg Chebeneev

Ive met tons of different builds in BGs, not only TG. I myself have 3 different characters and none of them is what you describe.

Reader

If that’s the effect of Xeqq’s videos, then great. More balancing power. Still, people were screaming for a BS-TG nerf for months now, if not years. The caster builds are mostly instants and defensives, same as the melees. There ARE some different builds but they aren’t that much diverging of one another.

Toptier wise, there are like four.

Well, I’m slowly trying to move out before the middle of next month, and I’ve been feeling under the weather for a few days. I’m not sure how well my MMO plans will come to fruition, but here they are:

FFXIV – Make it Rain Campaign and go into the planning phases of making my own free company. I’ve got a lot of stuff decided, but I need to draft the charter and find one more founding member. To make a long story short, I’m tired of being in and out of various FCs for a myriad of reasons that make me realize that my spouse and I would probably be fairly good at managing our own. We want a good community built to last more than a year or a few months.

Blade & Soul – Uh, I guess remember how to play this game, and level up my summoner and blade dancer as I see fit.

Dauntless – Try out the open beta and see what’s up! Since it’s just beta, I don’t plan to invest too heavily yet.

Granblue Fantasy – I joined a Japanese-speaking crew to have a fun way to keep my language skills sharp. I’ll be going through the Auguste Isles story to unlock more stuff, as well as saving materials to uncap… everything. There are still free daily gacha rolls thanks to horse girls, and this past week I got an SSR summon courtesy of said horse girls. I’m gonna miss them when they’re replaced by the Persona 5 event…

We have a MOP clan over on Lyn & Soul. If you are on Yura, you can look us up on MOP Epic…or something like that. You can find me mostly on Otogi Jushi. Mr. rafael (or designated GM) has a few characters too that all end in “ilee” or something like that…

…either way, I hope to bump into you soon! :)

Moving is such a stressor; my condolences. And to be ill as well? Urgh. Just not what you need, I’m sure.

Sleep when you can, drink tea. Chicken soup does actually help, believe it or not (something in the broth, I believe). If you’ve got humans who can take care of you, allow that, if possible.

Enjoy your games, and feel better. :-)

Best,

And so it begins again. The hype and sounds of E3. And I fall for it. Of course. Yeah, in know the pitfalls but it is also a celebration of games. And that I will support each and every time.

So, this week, my focus away from work will be on E3. I nerd out on details on any games that strike my fancy. And this year should be interesting.

Warframe is on my list to dive into this week as well. I can get a free frame apparently.

Also, let me just warn you now, I will be talking about Fallout 76. Yup. I may give Bethesda a lot of shit for the bugs that they ship with, but they have made some outstanding games over the years. From Morrowind to Fallout 4, you can’t deny they deliver.

And of course, there is Blade & Soul. Starting a new Raid tier this week and it is some serious shit. Vortex Temple as it is called will require many hours of work, so…

Two quick items as I leave you today. First, do yourself a favor and watch the No Clip documentary on Bethesda. Pretty damn good. Yes, a bit of a fluff piece, but also a good walk down memory lane and a study on how to make games.

And also, I made a new Soulfighter. And so it begins again for me too. And BnS throws you right into the deep end as you will see in the short vid.

Have a great weekend everyone. I’ll be lurking over E3.

No Clip doc on Bethesda. It is long so grab some popcorn at least.

Still working slowly on FFXIII, didn’t have much time this week. I did finish the Osiris storyline in D2 this morning with the help of my buddy’s ten-year-old son. I suppose I’ll actually get around to the new stuff tomorrow at some point. Or maybe I’ll wait until the next expansion comes out to start it, heh.
Tonight the wife and I are going out to dinner for our nine-year anniversary. We’d probably stay home and be lazy but we have a restaurant gift card to burn that’s been in a drawer for the last two years.
MMO wise, the current sabbatical is going well so far. I accidentally started watching some streamer play GW2 last night and almost felt the urge to download it and login, which hasn’t happened in several years now.

I’ve reinstalled Fallen Earth. I’m a bit encouraged by the game’s acquisition by Little Orbit, and so for the first time in 5+ years, I’ve begun having a look around in the post-apocalyptic Grand Canyon.

The game actually looks better than I remember. I’d spent so much time in it previously that, whilst the mechanics are certainly not fluid or streamlined, were familiar enough not to be completely put off.

I started a new character just to get readjusted, before I continue my adventures on my high-level pistol-based combatant. Make no mistake, the game is still rough about the edges, janky in spots, and downright difficult to learn, especially if you’ve grown up with MMO’s that make everything easy starting out. But the depth can be very rewarding if the nuances are understood. Most certainly, there is an underlying charm…and some of the writing is sublime. I can see myself spending some time here again going forward, especially if the new team devotes a little love to it…if Little Orbit CEO Matthew Scott is to be believed.

The sunsets were always lovely. Must be all that residual radiation. ;)

That sky is on par with the beautiful skies in GW2 Paths of Fire. Speaking of skies, the horizon in IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad is very cool at dawn and dusk, eerie even.

I read on Massively about Little Orbit stepping in — hope they can rescue both the bigger games they’ve taken over.

Both looked interesting to me, but both slipped away before I got a chance to try them.

Beautiful pic, by the way. Thanks for this.

WoW – I played FE briefly, and I don’t remember the sunsets looking like that (but you probably have a better rig than I do, and certainly better than what I had then). Thanks for sharing the pic. I hope Little Orbit does right by FE – I could’t get into it, but it was a decent game.
