The Daily Grind: If you were an MMO NPC, what items would you drop for the players who slay you?

I fell in love with an epic and frankly underrated Twitter thread from game dev Ben Porter this week. “If you were an NPC, what items would you drop when killed?” he asked.

I’ma go first. A scribbly spreadsheet with incomprehensible budget numbers and also something that looks like resource caps from a dead sandbox. Like six different flavors of lip gloss. An empty tea mug. My R2-D2 phone case (better cut off my fingers and take ’em with you or you may as well just vendor my phone). A wallet with actual coins in it just in case my kids start hollering over one of those wishing well donation machines. And a USB stick with approximately 1TB of video game mods. Zero weapons and armor, but definitely some stylish pajama pants.

What will you drop? More importantly, are you worth taking down?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Body parts and equipment I have. Like the realistic versions like Shroud of the Avatar.

I’m shocked to realize that I would drop surprisingly little.

Probably the most interesting thing I would furnish as loot are my shoes, only because they’re a style of skateboarder shoe that you don’t see a lot of anymore. I had to order them online.

Why do I wear these shoes when I have never been a skateboarder? Because they’re really light and responsive when you’re balancing, or climbing, or just trying not to fall on your face.

I don’t even have a single tattoo. No secret map to the dragon’s treasure horde inked across my ribcage. Nothing.

Man, I may be the most boring NPC ever. I probably show as grey when you target me! :-)

I’d drop my wallet. With a couple of dollars.

Christ…player characters just come off as muggers don’t they.

The German word for “looting” is literally “corpse vandalism”. Which is a crime. And the reason they decided way back to adopt the English term for the games activity.

– A fanny pack of holding containing everything you might need to make console hard mods (or, incidentally, repair electronic devices).
– A VCR tape containing some random, little known fansubbed anime.
– Assorted Atari and NES cartridges.
– A well used copy of the Rules Cyclopedia.
– A “Get Out of my Lawn” sign.

What would I drop…?
A crapped out Iphone 5 that I refuse to turn in for a new one, despite the charge port being nigh busted and its battery life is equivalent to a lemming or kindergarten hamster… Vendor Trash
3 Rubber bands, not one more and not one less. Also Vendor Trash.
A nigh-life size replica of the Buster Sword of FF7 fame, tip bent and blunted and handle loose that clearly looks like it was found in the trash. Definitely Vendor Trash.

And the rarest? The information for a WoW account whose only use is a rogue with nothing but the entire collection of in-game Warcraft ‘erotica’-lite books, including the questionable contents of one Brazie Getz…

…All of it extremely valuable… Vendor Trash.

I refuse to surrender my iPhone 5S until they make another model with a headphone jack that is equally compact.
