You can safely ignore those weird Lord of the Rings Online subscription messages

If you got a cryptic letter from Lord of the Rings Online payment processing company Xsolla in the last day, you can safely ignore it.

The message told lifetime VIP members that their credit card had expired and included a link to register a new card, warning players that their subscriptions would otherwise be canceled – in 2038. Our tipsters, as well as Redditors and forum-goers, were justifiably concerned that it was a phishing email or that Xsolla had been hacked, though some folks did point out it could be a Year 2038 glitch.

We reached out to Standing Stone first thing this morning while its investigation was still ongoing; now, it has announced that there’s nothing to worry about after all. SSG says it was sent in error and that nobody’s sub is in jeopardy.

On a side note they are sending out apology emails to all lifetime owners atm that reads as follows.

Hi there,

Recently, you may have received an email from us stating that you would need to update payment information for The Lord of the Rings Online™ and that the subscription would expire in 2038. We apologize as this email was sent in error. This email confirms that your Lifetime subscription for The Lord of the Rings Online™ is valid indefinitely, and you do not need to make any changes to your account.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for your understanding.

Initially I was worried but I checked the link out safely and saw it had all my info, my turbine points, my stipend dates, what I had spent and when, card etails…etc..etc.. so it hardly needed to Phish as it already had everything, so I was fairly sure it was legit. Nice to have some definitive confirmation though.

The main worrying point for me was it saying you do not update your details by x date we will cancel your lifetime.. that was definitely a WT the very F moment.

I found it a little ominous to learn that my lifetime subscription had an expiration date.

I did learn that the last credit card they had for me expired in 2010.

Did it end up having something to do with the year 2038 problem? Or is that just when they set the lifetime subs to end right now, trying to prevent a possible problem if the date was set after that?
