It goes clicky.

Whether you’re already so far on-board for Anthem that you’ve already pre-ordered it or you’re waiting to see how the actual game works out, you will be able to take part in the game’s demo experience. There are two waves of demos planned, with the first starting on January 25th and running until January 27th, but it’s just open to players who have pre-ordered the game and Origin Access members. The second demo starting on February 1st and running to February 3rd is open to anyone who wants to download and install the game.

Both demos are likely to be identical in content, but players who get through the first demo are promised an exclusive in-game item as a reward (though details on what that item may be are unrevealed). Both demos will include missions and allow two character options, one of which will be the Ranger Javelin. If you’re waiting to see whether or not you want to take the plunge and make the full purchase, then, mark your calendars for February 1st.

I saw some videos of gameplay. Can you really just fly around and hover in midair? That’s going to make the game boring. They really need to add an energy meter and a control to use boost or something. Being able to just fly around like that doesn’t match the concept of the game.

Flight time is regulated by heat: stay in the air too long and your engines overheat and shut off.

Taking a dip in a river or flying through a waterfall will cool you off (sometimes giving you a buff that lets you stay in the air for longer than normal) while taking a sharp dive towards the ground will let you bleed off a little bit of heat (but it is more of an emergency measure).

A couple of the suits are better suited for aerial combat than others, but nothing can stay in the air indefinitely.

The flight controls are also temperamental & something of a bitch to, well, control: I was constantly faceplanting into walls durring the Alpha by hitting the wrong button to hover or jerking the stick too hard and flat gave up on aerial combat since being airborne makes you a giant target for everything & leaves you with no cover.

Can’t wait for the gripping storyline and to be connected to the characters on an emotional level.

I actually liked the writing and the banter with your partner is actually what sold me on preordering: the Voice Acting and Mo-Cap is really well done, with real actors playing distinct characters, instead of Nolan North & Tara Strong voicing 5/6-ths of the entire cast.

Hmm. Give them credit. At least they are letting everyone have a sample before launch and not just Origin Access.

Heh. Could it be that I’ll be called out to the mat on this one?. You see, my New Year’s gaming resolution is to not give companies like EA a dime.

Lol! It would be just my luck that Anthem actually delivers.

Here is hoping for the worst!

I’m kidding. 😇

Well, at least we will get a chance to try it. Who knows, maybe the will do well with the game. Maybe.

i was in the closed weekend test a few weeks ago and while it wasn’t terrible whatsoever i was just generally underwhelmed and too many memories of needless and badly written dialogue trees in between me and the “fun stuff” combined with the “fun stuff” not being terribly fun from the past several bioware games i’ve played or attempted to play…

combined with it very much in certain ways riffs on destiny (you have people talking to you on radio and it’s very very much feels wise like d2) and it’s just bad vibes.

i’m sure many people will quite enjoy it tho. i think i’ll go with division 2 for this kind of game this winter/spring as i’ve got guys actually interested in that already so…

Yeah it just feels like the game is…there. No hype at all. I need a shooter the Division might be the one.

I’ve been playing a lot of old and ‘retro’ shooters lately; Hexen 1 & 2, Unreal, Ion Maiden, etc. and having a blast. No loot boxes or microtransactions to be had and it’s so refreshing.

This is about what I expected. EA’s take on the Division/Destiny game style.

Nothing too dangerous, nothing too exciting, just nice and safe. Do their best to avoid as much negative backlash as possible to try to “repair” their brand a bit with a title that neither impresses but more importantly doesn’t disappoint.

Division 2 is where my cash is going for my Loot-Shooter fix.

Division 2 is where my attention is going as well. Got my pre-order in for that. Will hit you up when that gets started, I remember good times with you guys in the DZ last time

The game is nothing like Destiny outside of the fact that both of them have lobbies & loot & aliens & guns.

Functionally, it is a reboot of Mass Effect (same combat mechanics, but completely new plot & light RPG elements) with the shitty ass crafting system overhauled and depreciated in favor of more loot and randomized item stats.

Anthem has got a much smaller footprint than Mass Effect because it lacks so much of its parent IP’s RPG depth, but that also dumps all of the fetch and return filler quest baggage and the development overhead of having to write & record 6 different versions of the same content. The end result is a tighter and cleaner, but yes also smaller, game about blowing shit up.

… That said, the comparisons to The Division are inarguable: Trade the cover system for Flight as the core combat mechanic, missions are launched from your HQ instead of the world map, & remove the dark zone PvP but apply the DZ’s unforgiving difficulty curve to the entire world map. People who liked Devision, but prefer Sci-Fi to Politics, will probably be very happy with Anthem.
