Firefly Studios announces new MMO city-builder Romans: Age of Caesar

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to announce Romans: Age of Caesar, a new grand-strategy MMO from Firefly Studios, creator of MMORTS Stronghold Kingdoms. The game is described as “a co-operative grand strategy MMO” and “a shared world builder” in which players must work together “to rebuild the great cities of Rome.” It’s a fitting return to the setting for Firefly Studios founders Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette, both of whom worked on the classic Caesar series of games.

According to the press release, the game will provide “classic city builder gameplay across an online continent” where players can “build and trade with everyone on the same map.” There will be 16 players to a city, and each of the governors will share resourcse as they seek to establish trade routes, protect themselves from barbarian invasions, and rebuild the republic. Romans: Age of Caesar is currently slated to release on PC and mobile platforms sometime this year, and closed alpha signups are open on the game’s official site.

“closed alpha signups are open on the game’s official site”

Is there a link to the site? Usually I find it in the source at the end of the article but this one is just a press release. Yes, I can (and will) Google it but its nice to have a link in the article…

Oooooh. A city builder that is a multiplayer AND co-op? TAKE MY MONEY!
I’m not sure that 16 people will be feasible though, in my opinion most people into co-op and cerebral games are older and have limited time at their hand (married, kids, jobs) or are loners. Founding and maintaining 16 people groups of rather casuals or infrequent players seems like a problematic audience call to me.

Why does it say “Comment awaiting moderation” suddenly, did I get flagged somehow or is that a general new thing??

With Paradox Interactive launching “Imperator: Rome” in April, they will have their work cut out for themselves here.
Firefly Studios is no stranger to strategy games either of course.
Just seems to me the target audience for both these games is pretty much the same one.
And if 16 player co-op is the main card up their sleeves, i’m not convinced that’ll work.
For all i can tell, this type of game mainly attracts an inherently solo focused audience (or at most 2-4 player MP).
Early days though, we know next to nothing yet, that trailer sure didn’t give anything away.

Ohh, this is something I would love to play! I love cooperative world-building — Or the idea of it, at least! I also have a soft spot for the Ceasar games from years ago.

Cool, I guess, but Roman theme isn’t really my thing. If it was Western/Eastern fantasy, just medieval Western/Eastern game, I’d be on board, but this is not for me.

Oh so this is where they ended up, I was wondering what came of the people behind those ageless classics just the other day… still around, go figure!

I think that if it fits on mobile devices then it is probably not a good fit for PC players who generally prefer much more complex games than can be squeezed onto a mobile device.

Just my 2c.

No one?
Yea no. Next time don’t include those two words in such a sentence and speak for yourself. Cause there a quite a lot of people that love City builders and RTS strategy games.
