In case you haven’t heard, big changes are coming to Neverwinter with its Undermountain expansion, which is slated to go live sometime this spring, and the game’s latest dev blog details yet another mechanic that’s due for an overhaul — boons. Boons are an integral part of the game, as they provide powerful permanent bonuses that give players an additional avenue of progression and customization for their characters, but the developers felt that the system needed a bit of streamlining.
For starters, the boon UI has been simplified to consolidate all boons in a single UI panel, which should make it a bit easier for players to see the options available to them at a glance. In addition, boon points have been unified as well; no longer will players need to manage different types of boon points for different boon groups.
Moreover, boons are now grouped into tiers, and “each tier requires a minimum amount of points to be invested before they can be used.” For tiers one through four, there’s no limit on the number of boons a player can acquire — provided they have the points, of course. However, tier five boons are particularly powerful, so players are limited to investing points into only two of the possible options.
Beyond tier five boons, players will find master boons, which are “boons that do a bit more than just give passive bonuses.” As the name implies, these boons are especially impressive and can have major effects on a character’s playstyle. As such, each character will have to choose a single master boon to invest their points into. That more or less sums up the changes, but if you want to check out all the details (and take a look at the spiffy new boon UI), you can read the full dev blog on the game’s official site.
