Ryzom goes behind the scenes to talk guild islands and a new boss monster

Anyone reading this recall Ryzom? It’s a French-made sandbox MMO that is under the stewardship of Winch Gate, which made the title open source in May 2010 and still lives on as a F2P title via Steam. The folks at Winch Gate have kicked out a newsletter that lets folks behind the curtain of some new things in the works — the first of a series of posts that are due to arrive every two-and-a-half months or so.

One such feature is the introduction of guild islands, which function pretty much like guild halls in other MMORPGs, though not all of them have to be surrounded by water. In fact, the guild island feature utilizes Ryzom’s Scenographic Editor to let guilds fully customize the scenery of their island. Another feature is the Yubokin, a monster that’s described as an evolution of the Yubo monster. The dev blog offers a more design-focused look at this new monster and touches on the challenges involved in its creation.

The post also takes a peek in to some of the script and bug fixes being developed, a quick word with a couple of members of the event team, and even some time with one of the MMO’s lore team members. For those still playing this title, it’s a pretty healthy chunk of information.

Stuff like Ryzom and Wurm Online make me regret that I have but one life to live.

If there wasn’t so much else out there that I want to see and do, I’d very comfortably have lived in worlds like those for so much longer.

Tell me about it. I had to give up wurm years back so I could study. I was finding it impossible to find enough hours in the day to do both, and one had to go.

Still not 100% sure I picked right, but I guess wurm will still be there when I retire.
