Blade & Soul joins the battle royale bandwagon with the Shackled Isles limited time event

So, how about that battle royale flu, eh? Seems to be going around. Now Blade & Soul has caught the bug with the introduction of Shackled Isles, a limited time king of the hill PvP mode.

Shackled Isles will pit 20 players against the challenges of enclosing Dark Chi corruption, random boss spawns, and (of course) fighting one another. To help you get through the melee, random boosts can be found that grants boons like a shield and recovered HP. Winning the mode will grant you “exclusive rewards and bragging rights.” The mode will be open for one hour at certain times, starting at 12pm server time.

The battle royale mode is part of a number of things happening during the Legacy of the Hongmoon Clan events, including additional rewards for completing dynamic quests from raids, and the Candycloud Park dungeon as part of the Blossoming Soul event.

All of the events run between Wednesday, March 13th, and Wednesday, April 10th, with reward redemption available between March 13th and May 8th.

Looking forward to this. Any of you playing Blade and Soul, or if you played BnS before and may do so in the future, take a quick screenshot of your skills today. The Hongmoon book is going to change significantly and it might be good to have the old skills and distribution handy.

BR, yeah. I’ve known about it for a while. I’m not sure what to think about it. But it will be fun thrashing each other in BR mode for a while.

I’m in on the Lyn Warden. Got my slot ready.

I’ll be kneed deep in awakenings. I have no idea who I’m going to spec my toons yet. That will take some time.

And I look forward to all the even goodies. They are usually well worth the effort.

Still, I’m most curious about the story. The last episode was… let’s say, emotional. The Hongmoon School has paid a heavy toll.

Here’s hoping you would read this: I’ve sent you an ingame message…querying as why the Lyn Wardens hadn’t dropped today. Maybe I missed a memo or something or somewhere. :(

It’s ok. It’s an overnight update. The servers will go down early tomorrow morning and they will update the game.

March 13 is the actual date of deployment for you and me. But I guess it is different for folks on other continents.

They have their maintenance at the same time, on the same day of the week (Wednesday for me) practically every week like clockwork. Not sure how you could get confused about that.

Err…I get confused by things I am not actually aware of. So I am asking for clarification. Is this a problem?

Nah, there was definitely talk about the 12th date this time around. I think there are some that are fearful of the skill changes and wanted to prepare with screenshots etc. Lol

Meh, it will be fine. But it might mean messing around with your skills a bit until you get the right combinations for your playing style.

Well…I may need eventual advice on that. I’ll just spec to whatever sounds good, until Icy Veins picks up the B&S IP I can refer back to… >.>

I was more concerned if I had to unlock Lyn Wardens through a gauntlet of faction and Cheevo grinds, like I had to do with that other game I am focused on to unlock new “races”. :(

No worries. Spec the way you want too, you can always go back to the old tried and true spec you have now.

Oh, btw, you can make a true Frost Force Master after this patch.

Yays! <3

Yeah, for some reason people over here kept saying March 12. I think they were referencing the last day with the old skills system, but it got confused.

…either way, I hope my Lyn Wardens drop today! >.<

Why only one hour at certain times? Seems limiting for no reason. I hated when TERA did that with nexus spawns. It made it so it was hard to find a group for any other content during the hour before it started as no one wanted to miss it (not because it was fun, it was the opposite of that, but because it was a necessity)

I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with it, but it gives them certain advantages in doing time limited modes. It encourages people to do different events around the clock and to engage in community resources (like boss timers).

BDO does it with bosses and Node Wars. GW2 does it with most events/bosses happening once every 3-12 hours. BDO even runs its own battle royale every hour EXCEPT Node Wars, because if a BR mode got in the way of Node Wars, there would have been a revolution.

The 5 hours it will be available should catch most people that want to play. Battle Royale games aren’t usually intended to attract existing players anyway. They’re to bring new and returning players.

From the website:
“Hours of Availability: For 1 hour, starting at 12:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00, and 23:00 Server Time”

Yeah, it is their attempt to create daily events. Not sure that it works as they intended, but it does create anticipation when battleground is new.

After a while, the novelty wears off and waiting to run these quasi-events become irrelevant.

With BR, it might be different though. We will see. If it stays popular they may change things up.

Likely because they don’t anticipate the new mode will be full of people, so rather than most people at most of times have to wait a long time for a match, they choose to have a set time so matching the new mode will be fast.

However, if they could design a system where the player can queue for a BR match while doing other stuff in game, then there isn’t really a legitimate need to confine the time window.
