Add another game to Blizzard’s development graveyard.

According to Gamespot, the World of Warcraft studio decided to cancel an unannounced game project that has been in the works for two years now. One of the project’s developers, David Gibson, slipped this information into his farewell tweet from the company, saying, “Well, today is my last day at Blizzard. Unfortunately you’ll never see what we made over the past two years — that’s gamedev, but we’ll always have Overwatch.”

Last year, we reported that Blizzard has multiple unannounced games in the works, including several related to the Diablo franchise.

Blizzard has developed a reputation for canning games if they didn’t pass muster, even if they came from a strong IP or had millions of dollars poured into their development. These include infamous titles such as Warcraft Adventures, StarCraft Ghost, and the MMORPG Titan (which subsequently was turned into Overwatch).

Update
Kotaku now says it has reason to believe it was a StarCraft first-person shooter, “like Battlefield in the StarCraft universe.” There were apparently no layoffs, and the goal was reportedly to focus on the Overwatch and Diablo franchises. “We always make decisions about these things, regardless of the ultimate outcome or how things might be interpreted, based on our values, what we believe makes sense for Blizzard, and what we hope our players will enjoy the most,” Blizzard told Koraku.
