WRUP: What’s in the Forgetting Closet edition

82
what

Last week’s car bill: This is how I save so much money on my car loan. The company forgets they sent it and then they have to credit me for failure to properly notify while also waiving late fees. I wrote myself a note because otherwise I would also forget.

The complete run of the 1993 animated cartoon The Bots Master: This was a good show but apparently we all needed to forget about it.

An entire ham: I don’t know why there’s a ham in here.

Legendary columnist Phillip Michel: Yes, everyone’s favorite columnist from Massively-that-was has been locked in the Forgetting Closet for several years now. What’s that? You don’t remember Phillip’s columns like Keeping it Surreal, The Big Question, and Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Fun? Then I guess the closet works, doesn’t it, Phil? Don’t even bother asking about your boyfriend, Phil, he’s with me now.

A second entire ham: Okay, that one I do remember, but I don’t want to talk about it.

What Are You Playing: Really, this one seems obvious.

Bonus question: What’s your weirdest habit that you’re aware of? (That is entirely suitable to share in mixed company, please.)

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Pokemon Go has had a few weeks of events I’ve barely been able to participate in but I’m gonna try to hit it hard Sunday for community day, which also happens to be Undertale’s birthday. The day before will be a Smash Bros day I think, since the people at the console gaming party I go to enjoy that.

Weirdest, safest habit to share with the internet. Hmm… maybe blocking the elements. I’m taller and wider than most of the people I hang out with, so if I notice the sun’s in their eyes, I’ll try to cast a shadow over them, or if it’s windy, I’ll try to position it so I’m blocking some of the air. Not sure how often it’s noticed, but I don’t know anyone else that does that.

…or randomly using Japanese. In America. Old habits die hard, especially when I actually do use it at work sometimes.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I’ll probably be in Guild Wars 2 a bit, though my mother-in-law will be in town, so maybe not that much! I’ve almost completely finished map completion in Path of Fire on one character (about half of Vabbi to go), I swooped through to collect essential hero points on my alts, and I’m working on my griffon now. The double mastery weeks have been awesome; I wish ArenaNet did them more often. This feels like a more natural rate of gain.

I’m a pacer. I pace. Wireless headphones have meant I can’t stop myself from pacing even when recording the podcast. (Sorry!) It just helps me think and work things through.

Carlo Lacsina (@UltraMudkipEX): I plan in doing some high level content in Final Fantasy XIV with the wifey tomorrow. I’ve started using a parse so I’m working towards being more efficient at playing my classes while avoiding mechanics. Other then that, I’ll be diving into some Teamfight Tactics as well. I like how the game pretty much plays like Mahjong and there’s no need to buy cardpacks or anything like that.

As for a weird habit… I like to eat the sweet stuff before the entree if I get a lunchbox. I have a sharp taste so I’m not too fond of sweets. I like the feeling of something savory slowly replacing the sweet.

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): Mostly Dauntless once again. I’ve got a couple of missions to complete before being able to try the Trial Islands. I’ll also be playing a fair bit of Daemon X Machina as a palate cleanse; you have NO idea how long I have been thirsting for an Armored Core game in the modern console age, and boy is this one good.

I have a one weird…habit? Character trait? Compulsion? That I have had for a long while and I don’t know where it stems from. When I’m bored, I like to find and arrange triangular shapes using objects laying around my desk, like pieces of paper angled with the base of a monitor to form a triangle in the empty space or an envelope angled over a book to create four triangles. For some reason, I feel an odd sort of comfort when I do that and I don’t get why.

Colin Henry (@ChaosConstant): I’ll probably be playing mostly Guild Wars 2 this weekend. I’d love to have my Skyscale finished in time for Tuesday’s Bound by Blood release, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Like a lot of players, I kind of stalled when it came to collecting all of the map currencies. Also, the more I play World of Warcraft: Classic, the more I want to play Lord of the Rings Online. Maybe it’s just because they’re so similar mechanically, or maybe it’s because it’s because I keep seeing all of these nostalgic players in WoW and it makes me want to play a game that I have actual nostalgia for. I’m hopelessly behind on the legendary server at this point, so I’ll probably just go back to the normal servers and work on my Rune Keeper.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Between my usual antics in FFXIV and the newly released Greedfall, I should be full up on stuff to do this weekend. So watch me make a hard turn and do something totally different, I don’t trust myself with these things.

Honestly, people seem to think a bunch of my habits are a bit on the odd side, but my wife will occasionally tease me for my habit of eating every meal starting with the side dishes and then ending with the main dish in a very methodical fashion. It’s just about what the last taste in my mouth winds up being.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): Now that I’ve gotten flying in Battle for Azeroth (huzzah), I’m turning my attention back to my Hunter whom I’m going to train up in Engineering. I haven’t done any serious crafting in World of Warcraft for a long time and am actually pretty excited about it.

Mia DeSanzo (@neschria): I will be back in WoW Classic and Trove. My 4-year-old is interested in watching me play Trove, because it looks like Minecraft, which he watches his sister play. I have friends playing WoW Classic that I might try to catch up with. I have a lot of other domestic and academic stuff to do, but I am treating the games as a reward.

Weirdest habit? I rinse glasses when I take them out of the cabinet before using them.

Samon Kashani (@thesamkash): This will be a good weekend for Crowfall but I also want to spend some more time in Legends of Aria. I made it through the first few skill leveling (or whatever it is called) and reading Chris’s play through got me interested in jumping back in.

Weird habits… perhaps singing out loud any random tune at the top of my lungs whether or not anyone is around to get annoyed by it.

Tyler Edwards: I’ve been talking about it for ages, but I finally did it: I started another playthrough of Mass Effect: Andromeda. Gods I love the new game+ in this. I already have a bajillion skill points and all the gear I could possibly need for any build, so I can just focus on the story. No grinding needed; I’m not even bothering to loot bodies. I’m planning to romance Jaal this time, but Peebee also tempts me, and I can’t rule out the possibility that I’ll just end up throwing myself at Suvi again. That said I may not have that much time for video gaming this weekend. I’m doing a second play test of my table-top RPG on Saturday and going to an amusement park with my friends on Sunday.

Bonus question: Whenever I pour myself a drink, I always need to take a small sip immediately. It’s a compulsion. Also, like Bree, I spend a lot of time pacing.

Every Saturday, join the Massively OP community and staff for What Are You Playing, our roundup of what MMORPGs and other games we’re hoping to play this weekend (with a bonus question or two for our amusement). Tell us what you’re up to! Go off-topic! And don’t forget to have fun!

Apart from the usual Warframe Sorties and Void Fissures, this weekend has a D&D theme:

Some low level solo adventuring in DDO‘s Harbor area, on a clone of the Dragonborn Warchanter Bard I’m playing in the Thursday streaming group, to test out build options. Before trying the class out I’d never imagined the Bard’s passive song buffs would be this strong.

The “Pre-Alpha” Steam demo for D&D5e adaptation Solasta: Crown of the Magister after seeing a bit of it on Critical Role’s channel. The inventory system is annoying and the camera can be a bit fiddly in multilayered vertical areas but I really like what they’re doing with three-dimensional combat and lighting and look forward to seeing what the engine’s capable of in the full game. (Demo not recommended for arachnophobes.)

And finalising the build plan for a Changeling Monk/Inquisitor of Desna in Pathfinder 1e tabletop. My group finished the Strange Aeons adventure path last week and is starting Curse of the Crimson Throne this week, some urban intrigue should be a nice change of pace after 18 months of extraplanar Mythos gribblies!

Welp, during the week I got bitten once again by the Stardew Valley bug, so I’d been playing that a LOT. I went all the way from a new farm to Winter day 10 or so in the span of a few days.

But now? I’m enjoying the heck out of Borderlands 3, which leads a bit into my weirdest habit… whenever I get up out of my computer chair, I involuntarily make a fart sound. I don’t know why or when it started, and I don’t LIKE that I do it, but it’s become habit and it’s going to take a lot to unlearn it.

Over the last few weeks WoW Classic has been having a fight with an Oculus Quest for my gaming time. Rightly or wrongly the VR headset won, so I’ve mostly been playing Space Pirate Trainer and Drop Dead: Dual Strike Edition.

Quite why I chose to switch from a game that allows me to pour myself drinks, eat snacks and relax in my chair to one that requires me to do none of those and you know, actually move, is quite beyond me.

Therefore I’ll be labelling that as my weirdest habit this week.

The week: *Pigtails do a brief interlude dance to some Brazilian House as the owner has nothing worthy to add to this week’s WRUP*

Also this week: *They are also doing some house cleaning with the WoWR account*

Oh, yes…have a great week and weekend folks! <3

A lot of Fire Emblem: Three Houses still. Though I feel like I screwed up two of my characters because I took them down certain class paths and now I wish I’d taken them down others. Kind of annoyed about that, but what can you do? I’m obsessive enough that I almost want to start over. I’m “only” twenty hours in, and I’ve happily thrown away fifty-hour+ save files in other games for lesser reasons.

Getting back into Red Dead Online now that the Summer update dropped, with a brief sojourn into GTAO for all the playing cards so I could get the Collector role for free. I hope they keep adding all sorts of different roles and stuff. Give me ranch chores, please!

this week i did a bit of div2 with r4d, and continued my casual marathon farmage and crafting progression in legends of aria. i took a bit of a break this week from star citizen where people don’t seem to know one way or the other if the bugs i am waiting on being fixed are fixed and i’m not super motivated to bang my head on them again so soon so i’m chilllllllllin on that. as a rule it’s always the best time to play right now (since roughly 3.1 spring last year) and it’s always best to wait for a future patch – especially when things are not grooving too well and your gaze is swayed to other endeavours :D

my fluffy cotton luck has improved in this run. which i really just got lucky with spawns in general and took advantage. the farming here provided several more hours worth of crafting progression which i left out of the vid because it might as well be footage of me afking for 3 hours from a viewer perspective 90% of the time. lol. i’m a bit under half way to my goal of purchasing a housing plot marker which costs 6p 6000 gold. the progression rate here feels pretty solid all things considered, and there seems to be enough available housing space that i don’t feel exceptionally rushed to getter done faster than a casual once a week session like this sort of pace.

me and r4d started over in div2. when he got the game he upgraded his pc significantly to improve his experience in the game but by that point the rest of us pplaying were high level and not interested in rerolling at that time. so runningh through missions was unrewarding for us while being unfun for him – and feeling rightfully like it’s wasted game fun times. we’re having a good go it on round 2 though as we static duo the leveling content here and there for a couple hours at a time. i really find the wandering around “scavenging” loot of this game satisfying and chill af. and while sometimes often it feels like the game throws me items other than what i’m looking for a bit too much, in general it feels very rewarding and even when i’m getting a run of gloves that aren’t upgrades or anything but an assault rifle of the correct range of variations i prefer it’s still fun to joke about how many gloves or that one kind of sniper i’ve been getting the past hour

also pushed my album to distrokid whom then began publishing it to all teh stores and streaming services. i wanted to do a set release date of october first but that costs a bunch more money from distrokid on a yearly basis. alot of this stuff seems to be paying bots to listen to your songs and paying the services to push unsolciited listens on people looking for unrelated things. it feels awkward af. especially when spotify keeps pushing the new tool album on me when it’s just not something that makes any sort of sense with my spotify play history XD

anyways here’s the album in it’s full glory (the bandcamp version has a bonus thing but i left it out of the other places because i don’t like how it flows with the rest of the album).

i’m taking a couple weeks to rejuvenate a bit and cook up some ideas and thoughts etc. so far the plan is to learn the monologue a bit better and look for less ALL the features at the same time! sounds from it.

make sure to recreate responsibly and remember to bring a sweater or hoodie with you if you go out.

my weird habit is that whenever i drink from a can/bottle (say soda or beer or w/e) i can’t finish the last bit. like it’s generally a fair bit of it left in the can or bottle when i’m *done* with it. attempting to drink the rest (or being “forced” into it as the case may be on occasion) will result in some lovely real life vomitting generally speaking, or at least not good stomache feelings.

i actually try to use a glass/cup now whenever possible, but also don’t drink much of any soda or beer either anymore.

Well bois and grls, for me things are going to start ramping up game-wise.

Borderlands 3. Shit, is fun as hell!! So, I’m sucked into that.

Blade and Soul is on my list for this week. I have my free archer pack and voucher read for the drop this Wednesday.

Gears of War 5 Ultimate is downloading right now. I got in on that PC game pass special offer which means I have access to their library including new games.

On my radar is Outer Worlds. I’m a big fan of Obsidian and their rpg style. I’m thinking this will be the hidden gem of the year.

Reader
Sray

The Outer Worlds looks pretty good to me too. I’m really not a fan of first person games, but this one looks interesting enough that I’m at least going to give it a shot.

How does Borderlands 3 compare with 1 and 2? I played an awful lot of 1, but just couldn’t get into 2 for some reason.

Reader
rafael12104

Well, it compares well to 1 and 2 if you like looter shooters. You see some of the old crazy NPCs, weapons, and vehicles are better than ever, the story and commentary are great comic relief. Top it off with a wealth of content and multiplayer (I’m enjoying co-op with friends) and it is a great time.

Having said that, it does have its share of bugs, it is also an Epic store exclusive (if that matters to you) and it uses an anti-cheat called Denuvo which some gamers consider Malware. Give Denuvo a google. That controversy is over but just wanted to give you the heads up.

Reader
thirtymil

Thanks rafael. Epic Store exclusive doesn’t matter to me (I struggle to understand Steam partisanship given its history and general content) and as for Denuvo – well, I don’t like an unnecessary performance hit in games, but I’ll judge it by its spec requirements and if it doesn’t perform to them I’ll get my money back. Developer’s call if they want do things that way.

Co-op would be a big bonus, although we generally only play looter shooters until we’re out of plot so I guess it depends how much non-endgame content there is.

Oh, btw, weird habits?

I have a few. Heh. Let’s see, here is one.

I have this really weird habit of remembering funny moments at odd times. I’ll be doing my day to day interacting with real-life and suddenly I’ll remember something funny and start to laugh.

Don’t think that is weird? Well, the problem is the funny moment is not current or related to what I’m doing. So what other people see is me suddenly laughing for no apparent reason. LOL. And when asked why I’m laughing, explaining one of Schlag’s memes doesn’t work very well, for example.

WoW Classic and Final Fantasy XIV remain my two primary games for the forseeable future. This weekend I’ll be getting my WHM up to 60 so I can mark that check off, then work up probably DRK/WAR alongside each other so they stay together gear-wise. And I should probably mix in some PvP with that too. With Classic it’s just leveling up my Warlock, currently level 33, been putting less priority on Classic for the moment as I need to focus more on the GARO stuff in XIV.

Other than that might squeeze some games of Smite in while that community event is going on and the current battle pass is winding down.

“check that mark off” is probably the better way to say it, lol.

Beyond my two “Star” game mainstays — Star Trek Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic, I’ve been playing a lot of No Man’s Sky lately.

I’m still lost in deep space, and trying to get back to where I want to be. Stay tuned!

My strangest habit? Probably that I talk to myself. A lot.

It started when I was in university; I lived alone, and rented the ground floor of this old (old!) converted C19th house and it was really quiet. Like, really quiet.

Yeah, I had music available, but I was usually studying/doing homework, or gaming as recreation — and I’m one of those people for whom music is not usually “background noise” while I’m doing other things.

If there’s music on, it tends to pull my attention to it.

So, to combat the relentless silence, I started talking to myself in a joking way, but it’s become a bad habit over the years now, and I’ve occasionally had to reassure people that I’m not a dangerous lunatic. :-)

Be well, everyone. Take care of yourselves, and each other, please. See you next time!

I didn’t think about it, but yeah, that talking to myself bit is a big one. I spend a lot of time in my car or hotel rooms by myself and over the years started talking to myself. And then when I need to logic something out at work I start vocalizing it out loud to work through it. And so now, all the time, coworkers or my daughter will walk in on me while I’m having a conversation with myself, and awkwardness always hilariously follows.

Been there too, Panda! :-)

My Mom’s joke sometimes comes in useful, “Of course I talk to myself! It’s the only way I hear the answers I like!” :-)

i used to talk to myself, my mom still does sometimes when she’s got something heavy on her mind she’s excited/mad/anxious about. but i try not to as i find it embarassing to do so and potentially unhealthy for me with my illness.

i do talk to my cat and my dog though. does that make me weird? i don’t think so. and also the quirrels and wild life and shiz around. talk to them too. they’/re chill as heck.

(i do i suppose talk to myself alot in longposts online. looooooool)

Yeah, nothing is more reassuring than someone telling you, “Don’t worry, I’m not a dangerous lunatic.”

Still slowly puttering through FFXIV.

I did try to get back into Warframe, but it only lasted an evening. I finished the Vor tutorial, but then all the missions in front of me were defense/extraction missions. I finished them but found them boring so logged out and haven’t been back since.

I also side-tracked into the Dark Crystal Netflix show. It is amazing. It looks so good. The story is terrifying. I’m less than halfway through it, but I lurve it so much already.

For habits, like I said, I quit my nail-biting finally. And I totally mirror Bree’s pacing. When I’m on the phone especially, I end up walking outside the building and just marching up and down the sidewalk. But those aren’t my weirdest or most annoying.

I will preface by saying that I’m not at all a musician, but I make my family completely insane because I am a finger-tapper, and a hummer, and a whistler.
But even then, the weirdest thing I do, related to that, is I tap my teeth to the beat. I don’t think anybody else notices when I do it, but it’s totally there. I tell the dentist I grind my teeth because it’s less weird to explain.

Reader
Sray

You’re a finger-tapper, and a hummer, and a whistler, huh? Nice. I’m a joker, a smoker, and a midnight toker.

(sorry, I saw your list this immediately sprung to mind)

Great, now I have to start singing it.

Warframe is definitely one of those games that’s a drop in/drop out type of game. It’s fun for a little while, but then I just lose interest and forget I was even trying to do things in it.
