Hey, remember back when people used to type “first!” as the first reply to threads? Yeah, that was funny for like a whole week, and then people did it ironically for a few years, and now you almost never see it. Why? Because no one cares.
There are some “firsts” humans really do care about. First president. First person on the moon. First person to free climb a really tall thing and not asphyxiate and die. I get it. But the “first!” meme died because nobody cares. Being first is kinda random, but especially on the internet. Anyone could’ve done it. And your first will be followed by a zillion other people who can also do it, only they hopefully said something more than first.
This is kinda how I feel about world firsts in MMOs. I’ve been “first!” to accomplish some things in MMORPGs before, and you know what? I don’t feel like they’re worth bragging about. I definitely don’t think they deserve in-game achievements or whole event tracks to challenge people to go do them, but first. I wind up rolling my eyes at how transparently obvious it is when studios try to make world firsts a whole thing, and I don’t think it’s because I’m jaded. I still get wide-eyed at so much in MMOs. Just not at being first. (Especially knowing some internal QA team actually did it first. And second. And third.)
How about you? Do you care about world firsts in MMOs?

Not personally, no.
what is up with the moderation on this site ? do you just delete anything that doesn’t agree with the conclusion of an article (in this case, that someone care and why) ?
You look at the achievement but you don’t look at the process… People testing, wiping, figuring out the tactics themselves instead of following guides, no-lifing in coms bodying together. It is certainly worth the experience going for server/world firsts if you have a team with good vibes and time.
No and I feel sorry for people who do this just to brag about it. After you did “first win” stuff like this, what else is there to enjoy in game? Especially if you rushed through the story to reach this end game content.
Besides, absolutely NO ONE would care to remember if you were “first to kill dumb NPC on server” once a few years will pass. Nobody will ever write articles about you or the rest of your group on Wikipedia or any other kind of widely used encyclopedias, articles like:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz_Aldrin
Sorry to use such language but this does not change this fact. Unless MMORPGs will become as important as VR worlds in books such as Ready Player One – your “world first” is irrelevant to most normal people ;-)

Well, you’re wrong. I remember some names who did world firsts a decade later. Also its not about just bragging. People have fun chasing world first. So you’re judging people for having fun.
Not in the slightest. Don’t care about first anything in an MMO.
Not even a tinsy wincy eenie weenie tiny bit. Nope.
Such things to me mean nothing other than more folks rushing through and not appreciating the content in order to achieve some meaningless landmark in order to feel validated by it on some way.
It is as meaningful to me in an MMO as it is someone rushing to a comments section and writing “FIRST”! (which we’ve all seen) as if that is also some meaningful achievement worth noting. It isn’t.
I rate Firsts alongside Speed runs as being utterly meaningless and without value in any sense.
Not something I personally attribute ANY value too i’m afraid.
I don’t really care about world firsts.
I do care about server firsts.
Not that I ever attempted to achieve a server first, but I cared about it. Why? Because it becomes a part of your server community’s history. These are people you see online a lot, bump into, chat with etc, plus what they managed to achieve is probably something I want to achieve to so I can appreciate the effort they put in.
It is these types of shared events and history that help bind a community together.
Nope. Usually revolves around no-lifing and finding exploits/ways to game the system.
It was funny though getting RIFT server firsts for collecting random rare items from Cairns.
Nope. QA probably did it first anyway
