The Daily Grind: What MMOs are you no longer anticipating in 2021?

At the end of every year for almost as long as I can recall, we’ve delivered our “most anticipated” award. The winners in 2019 were a bit unusual: One was a true indie, which seldom makes it to the top, and the other… well, it ended up deciding not to be an MMO a few weeks later. And then it launched rather disappointingly.

In 2020, however, team picked a pair of AAA MMOs, definitely more safe selections. But if you skim down all the nominations, you probably see that some games that topped the list years ago just aren’t being nominated anymore, and it’s not necessarily because they launched or changed direction like our good friend the ex-MMO up above. As we’ve noted before, anticipation isn’t eternal: Eventually, everyone gets bored watching MMOs that have been in development a long time. It’s not that we’ve completely stopped caring or that we won’t play, just that we’re… meh. We’ve moved on to hunger for something else, maybe even something else that’s closer on the horizon.

What MMOs are you no longer anticipating? And how long had you been pining for them before you finally mentally moved on?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
