The Daily Grind: Which MMO has the best weapon animations?

19

I remember back when World of Warcraft was just plain vanilla and there was plenty of time to observe things during the countless fights. I remember looking at the same two attack animations being played out over and over again and thinking, “It’d be really cool if they added more animations in future patches as a feature!”

While I don’t think this ever came to be, I’ve been interested in quality-looking weapon animations that didn’t come off as someone swooshing a nerf bat through empty space while damage numbers magically appeared over an enemy’s head.

If you think over all of the MMOs you’ve played, which game has the best weapon animations? We’ll give points for both variety and technique here!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I really like games that have different races where each weapon has a completely different style based on the body type. I think I appreciate FFXI for this reason as you could be with another player wielding the same weapon, but is stylized to your race.

BDO. There’s nothing else that even comes close.

Any game that adds particle effects to animations needs to burn in hell, no, there is nothing cool about a basic animation coming with a light show.

There are good particle effects. And there are bad. Good ones improve the feel of combat alot

Def not ESO. Everybody looks like the world’s most uncoordinated nerd in that game.

I love many weapon effects on SWTOR. While graphically its not a perfect game, it has many animations for lightsabers, retractable blades, runes that light up,weapons that desintegrate and many more.

I also love the way the animations “line up” for lack of a better word and actually look like you’re clashing with the enemy.

I’d say For Honor, but it’s not an MMO. I’d love to see someone do an MMO with that style of combat.

Just a horribly underrated game. I love me some for honor. It gets more updates than most mmos even 5 years later lol

WoW’s new ones are decent, DCUO is passable, FF14 weapon animations look good but the spell particles are overblown and look weird. I liked Blade & Soul a lot, also Cabal Online have a lot of interesting cinematographic skills.

A old one i would “vouch” for is Priston Tale ( dear god i’m going to compliment Priston Tale ). The game was barebones but skill animations were one of the cool things. From a Knight spiraling into the air and crashing down with his sword in an area, to a Mechanician summoning a electrical Hadouken.

I thought EQ2 had really great auto-attack animations, monks with a staff looked especially cool, but then they sped up combat to the point where it looked like your character was having a seizure.

GW2 (especially the staff wielding daredevil), BDO and Skyforge.

Lost Ark by far.
TERA – second place.
I cant take BDO combat animations seriously with those horrendous particle effects.
