The Daily Grind: What’s the newest class you’ve played in your oldest MMO?

I don’t know about you, but I am not always that adventurous when it comes to picking a new class to play in an MMORPG. I will settle on my favorites early on and choose those again and again, even if I’ve played them to death.

But as of late, I’ve been challenging myself to walk on the wild side and pick classes that I’ve steadfastly ignored in some of my favorite MMOs. For example, I recently rolled up a Beorning in Lord of the Rings Online, which I’ve been neglecting for the better part of a decade now. And it’s kind of fun!

What’s the newest class you’ve elected to play in your oldest MMO — and what is your verdict on it so far?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’m glad you’re enjoying the Beorning. I didn’t like what they did in the revamp of that class/race. I find it much less playable and enjoyable. I deleted both of my Beornings shortly after the revamp.

Even though I’m not actively playing right now, I found I surprisingly liked holy priest in WoW just before shadowlands came out.

In my current mmo, FFXIV, I guess you could call it ‘old’ since I’ve been playing since 1.0…I was surprised I ended up really enjoying dragoon. I’m on the quest of leveling each class to 80, havent touched DRG since realm reborn when I had to level it to 34 for a subjob ability and I hated it back then. Now it’s a lot of fun. Actually, I’ve been enjoying all jobs in XIV in shadowbringers, with only monk, ninja and warrior left to go, they really hit the sweet spot on class design this expansion.

The oldest MMO I’m still actively playing is Star Trek Online. I have 36 characters, and that game only has three “character classes.” (Science, Engineering, Tactical.) My newest character is an Engineer, but it’s not a new class, even for me. So… I don’t know, I guess I’m just answering to participate.

Beep beep imma sheep.

PvP Bear on Project Ascension. Not your ordinary feral since its classless realm where people make their own builds. My bear had 15k HP at level 60, insane passive health regen and on top of that sick damage. Barely anyone could touch him in 1v1 arenas

Warrior in WoW before we all ditched it. Honestly I am not a big fan of melee fighters with no magic ability. But it wasn’t too bad. Probably won’t be signing up to make warriors on any new MMOs though.

Beorning. And I do love this class. Melee, ranged attacks, self heals and yet-to-be-mastered bear form.

Sentinel on Homecoming.

I don’t really have this issue. I make alts… lots of alts.

I recently made a Bard in Neverwinter and I make at least one of every new class that comes out in BDO (Corsair is wicked fun).
